It seems a video posted by a former PokeTuber has stirred things up a bit. She raises some valid points, and another PokeTuber has responded with some good counterpoints.
It got me wondering—how well do PokeTubers generally get along? Is the YouTube Pokémon space a close-knit community, or is it more like its own version of Game of Thrones?
I know nothing about this current “war,” but even still, I didn’t even have to click on the videos to know who at least one of the YouTubers would be. Sure enough, it was Opposum Bud, the king of drama.
They are two of the most insufferable people in the hobby.
Ive listened to a few of them, and sometimes they make good points, often not. Ive just stopped watching them altogether though, and just want to focus on pokemon without the noise.
Knew who these two were going to be before I even clicked.
It’s a classic engagement bait strategy. We saw it in 2020 (with the exact! same! people!), we’ll see it now. You’ll have puritans who claim “this isn’t what the habby should be,” screaming about the children and the money and so forth, conveniently ignoring their own role in everything and how Pokemon’s popularity has brought them the same financial windfall they criticize others for taking advantage of. On the other hand, you’ll have people who dismiss any feelings of frustration or annoyance with the current state of things as entitled and behind the times.
As others have rightfully noted, the best thing to do is to ignore it all.
I’ve never seen her before, but his videos have been recommended a few times. Clicked on a few in the past, but yeah drama just for YouTube engagement and views.
The only two I’ve seen collaborate are jluv and primal lugia
When I returned to Pokémon card collecting I watched a couple of Poketubers but I stopped watching basically all of them because most of them were either way too dramatic or fixated on hype. There are just a handful left that I watch somewhat regularly with like 1-2 videos per month in total.
I say the following without a shred of hyperbole, and no reservation whatsoever:
If you care about what these people think or have to say then you are an idiot, and there is nothing in 2025 with less worth than the opinion of a content creator.
People often say that the grass is greener on the other side [of the fence].
I prefer to sit on the fence.
When sitting on the fence, and taking a good look around, you can see that they either water their lawn, or you can see the pile of paint cans stacked against the fence, which they use to paint it green.
Often the truth of the matter is somewhere between the two points of view, and I think with a lot of these videos, the point(s) are either vague enough or numerous enough that every video has something accurate to say. Nuanced points rarely start wars, and they rarely get attention.
Youtube is probably the most beneficial social media platform (if it’s even really social media… yeah, it is now). I just never use it outside of subscribed channels. Only see what you want.
