As the the second party who got to see the card in person before it was sent off I can vouch for Gary and say this card definitely deserved a 9 at the very least. It has no silvering, no edge wear, and no visible foil scratches. The only thing we were thinking may stop it from the 10 grade was its centering. I remember saying it had a good shot at a 10. I’m quite shocked by the grade. Question: how many grades does an indent deduct? Some times the indents are really hard to catch unless you look at the bare card from multiple angles, however, I didn’t see anything when looking.
A very small indent/edge or corner issue can easily bring it to a 7 or even a 6. See masakis and a few random cards I have graded also. Not saying it is the case here, but it is in some cases.
Keep in mind Mistakes happen by all of us, at least by us humans cause we all know Scott is Roboman, and it’s crazy amazing that it’s the first time it happened to me. Psa’s record is remarkable:)
I will get this fixed along with my next submissions and will post when the PSA 9 or PSA10 is revealed:)
As for centering, it comes to 55/45 average exactly if hypernova’s measurement is exact. I had it about 56/44. Would that drop centering to 9.5 or 9? It’s safe to say you get a 10 if they’re not too harsh on surface. Good luck Sir.
There are 2 areas in PSA’s 10 grading standards that allow for a grader’s opinion to affect the grade:
“the centering should not exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 on the front”
Notice that the wording is not exact here, the “limit” is somewhere between this range, not this range exactly. If the grader looks at the card and feels like the centering is beyond their limit of what a 10 deserves, they would be allowed to knock a 57/43 down to a 9.
“Any imperfection on the card does not detract from the card’s visual appeal”
This is even more subjective than 1. A lot of great looking cards that we think deserve a 10 get dinged at this spot because the grader thinks that tiny corner white mark detracts from the card’s visual appeal (while another may not).
Just curious Gary, when you resubmit this card, do you plan on breaking it out of the case? I’m also resubmitting a shadowless char that I think deserves a 10 and didn’t want the previous grade to bias the grader, so I cracked it out. Just curious what the pros do
Pretty much a lock to get a 9-10 if resubmitted. I had a similar situation where a flawless card was given an 8, cracked in and put it with my next submission and it got a 10. I’ll be damned if I let a bullshit grade stay on my card.
