The Giant Professional Grading Thread

This has to be one of the dumbest innovations I have ever seen. Grade your grades.

“4th party grading”

While I mostly agree haha, it’s definitely not new. MBA has been around for a really long time, similar to CAC in coins. It’s kind of a way to grade the appeal within the grade. It does only really seem to be used by high end collectors though, and influencers.

Hey All, first time poster. New to card grading and would absolutely love to get better at it. What do you all think about this Shining Tyranitar? I uploaded a video walkthrough of it here: Watch IMG_2921 | Streamable

It’s been in a binder for pretty much all its life but the fraying/whitening around the edges seem like its only knock. PSA 6 or 7? Hoping for an 8 though. Would love any feedback, thank you!

Welcome to E4!

First off, amazing card.

It’s tough to see if there are any surface issues going on (dents, little creases, etc.) so I can’t give a super confident answer but I’d say this looks like a PSA 6.

Is there a scenario where PSA would reject your submission due to excessive damage i.e the card is ripped in half or the back is scratched out entirely? Trying to figure out if PSA 1 has a bottom limit.

As far as I’m aware, yes, there is a thing as being too damaged for grading for PSA. They will refuse to grade the card instead of just slapping a 1 on it.

Thank you for your response. Do they have that written down somewhere, or could you kindly share any examples of cards too damaged too grade?

Now you have to show us the front :pikashocked:

Follow up on my initial query I found a PSA 1 where they graded the staple

Hell yeah, charizard hanging on with 1 HP left! Very cool!

That fact that it is missing a portion of the card, I can see them returning it ungraded.

Good to know, thank you for your advice!

I couldn’t find it written down anywhere on their website, and I couldn’t find any examples of a card coming back ungraded due to too much damage. It’s mostly something I’ve seen people throw around, so it could just be general hearsay. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!

Thank you for looking around, I’ll keep the source in mind. Seems like a reasonable assumption that they wouldn’t accept a half card.

Anyone have any thoughts on grading with the NJ office instead of Santa Ana?

I have the impression that NJ is much faster, but has anyone had any bad experiences with NJ?

For me, who is from Europe, it is much faster to ship to NJ, and it feels safer with few shipping stops

Haven’t been given the option sadly. All my recent card orders were sent to Cali despite me being a very close drive to the jersey office.

Yeah I haven’t gotten a choice or option of one or the other, but several of mine look like they’ve shipped back from NJ. I wonder if they just have us ship to CA and then they send some of them to NJ at their own volition.
