What is your lowest grade before choice “Authentic”?

For me vintage 7>
Modern 8>

I always wondered, why not get an actual grade instead of just authentic? Even for a 1 of 1 or 1 of 39, it is still nice to know the actual condition.

Great question. The only time I choose authentic only is with signatures.

This is my opinion, but authentic only cards feel like an attempt to hide the fact that the card is a “low grade”. But of course depending on the card the grade doesn’t even matter.

“Authentic only” has been around for awhile in higher end cards. For some people having a PSA 4 grade on a card with a few hundred copies detracts from the rarity & luster. I think it makes sense in that scenario. Similar to autographs, its just a preference.

To me, the “authentic” grade just seems like you’re hiding something. I don’t really see the point of getting it unless you have something like a really clean card with a binder dent or small crease that you don’t want people to focus on. For the high-end market this makes sense in some cases I think, but for the vast majority of cards whenever I see an authentic grade I never consider buying because I know no matter how good the card looks there’s probably some very serious flaw.

Personally I have zero problem with grading more valuable cards in lesser condition and I would always prefer something like a 3-6 grade over an authentic copy.

For example, you have trio base set in played condition. They are probably all low grade. It’s more appealing seeing three “Authentic” instead of three different low grade haha

Authentic screams “this card is in bad condition but I want to be able to sell it without a low grade attached to it”

When psa damaged a card of mine in encapsulation I requested they put authentic instead of the 4 they turned it into. This was a pack fresh 1st ed dark typhlosion with a good chance at a 10, so for me seeing a 4 on the label woulda hurt way more than seeing “authentic”. That being said i was still angered by the card anytime i saw it so i sold it. The auction did worse than raw played copies, despite being a copy with only a dent on the border. PSA did pay out $400 for the damage, and i only paid $10 for the card so its kinda whatever at this point, but i wish I knew the grade it would have gotten, as the damage had happened after grading. PSA wont tell me. Probably a 10, almost all the other cards from that box got 10s.

raw > authentic ≥ low-grade imo

Agreed. Authentic should only be used for actually scarce or highly valuable cards (or extremely vintage, like pre-1950), or for autographs, IMO.

Has anyone owned any PokeGrade slabs from the UK company?

I bought a bundle of graded 10th Anniversary promos on ebay and half of them have the same damage on the top left corner despite being grade 9 and 10s. They would probably regrade as PSA 6.

Looks like they could have been damaged while being encapsulated. Not complaining to the seller but it sucks that a grading company could manage to damage so many mint 15 year old cards when encapsulating them

That Zard is a 3 at best

They shouldn’t have any subs under 40 or so again imo…peeps were Willy nilly sending too much junk without even looking at it…(cgc and Pokémon card 9 dollar subs did this too). But just ky opinion. I mainly use PSA and so would affect me. Just a thought.

Did anyone see this video on Pawn Stars about an error evolutions Ghastly - thought it was interesting that someone from CGC came to authenticate it and gave it an estimated value of $3,000. (Chum Lee ends up buying it for $2500). Honestly in the current market that seems high but I don’t know anything about error collecting - any thoughts on this?

Some peeps into error cards some aren’t…all depends on what someone would pay for it. I personally wouldn’t buy it for 5 dollars lol but I’m not an error guy.

Kinda a random number to throw out tho haha

Charlie knows what he’s doing
