The Giant Professional Grading Thread

anybody catch this post about a fake 1st edition stamp passing through PSA on /r/pokemontcg?

it’s pretty concerning; I wonder what resolution(s) PSA will take to prevent this from happening in the future.
obviously, this is a possibility considering the turnaround time & backlog but it just looks so poor from a pure optics standpoint.

Buy a mint shadowless charizard, print a fake first edition stamp and let PSA grade it as 8 or 9 then flip it and repeat. This guy submitted 3 cards and all 3 were graded as real, you gotta think there may be many more out there that may have already been graded. Yicks.

Not the first time this happened. Looks like PSA got a bit complacent, but the graders probably don’t get adequate enough time/card to really check the stamp. PSA will need to add a time buffer for future stamped cards.

This is incredibly concerning, and unacceptable even for a low tier card. It also preaches manual analysis, you’d think a corperation of PSA’s stature would have a technical pre-set automated metholodogy to mitigate from counterfeits on all submissions.

Thank god I haven’t bought any 1st editions, the pocket microscope is always gonna be on hand for deals from now on!

PSA needs to double the grading time per card

If they doubled to 20 seconds per card then it’ll be 2025 before they have a chance at reopening sub $20 per card.

In the week leading up to yesterday, 69,532 Pokémon cards were graded by PSA. 1,649 of those were Champion’s Path Elite Trainer Box Charizard V 050 promo cards, of which 753 received a PSA 10 grade. A further 207 of those have been graded in the past 24 hours.

7 months ago I reported on Chansey from the 2016 XY Evolutions set - which in June 2021 with 160 PSA 9 grades and no PSA 10s would have been regarded as one of the most difficult modern cards to grade - to say that it had finally had its first PSA 10 copy graded. Fast forward to now and a 5th PSA 10 has now been graded.

Next week we’ll no doubt surpass the 3,000,000 mark - though we may already be there as I’m sure a few sets will have slipped through the net. Reminder to everyone to please let me know if you’re aware of any sets missing from PokéMetrics - not everything appears on PSA’s pop report search any more.

QA2 was the worst step in the process but still only a few business days. Hoping this shipment arrives on Saturday, not Monday!

are turnaround times getting pretty good for regular/express tiers now?

If the guy charged upfront, submitted the cards then just bailed on it that sounds more like an outright fraud scheme. He stole the prepayment funds. You can’t just use that float to fund your other business ventures and then go “oops, looks like we’re out of business”. That’s not how it works.

Sure hope someone called the police/FBI on that grading service. LLC and bankruptcy doesn’t protect you if you’re running a fraud scheme.

Also these types of fraud schemes seem pretty common. Often times, the fraudster will dig themselves into some sort of hole and think they can dig themselves out by doing something else (in this case, trying to open a card store).

I think the card store was what got him in the hole, it wasn’t profitable enough to replace the funds.

Heard about the middleman company GradedGem loosing some customer submissions yesterday and was pretty shocked about the current resolution being offered, Has anyone on efour been effected by this?

They seem to be pretty good to me. I sent in a regular submission of 10 cards on Jan 12, registered Jan 14 and I got my grade results back yesterday so about 2 weeks total. Pretty happy with that speed really!

oh gosh that’s so fast. I’ve been keeping away from the graded scene for a while now. I thought If I sent a regular submission in it would take 8 months to get back.

I sent a Regular sub in March that was about 4 months door to door. Looks like they have a much better handle on Regular for now though, at least.

thats really encouraging to hear. Ill gladly wait a month or 2. I have a ton of '97 carddass prism holos that I think are strong 9-10 contenders but I’ve been thinking I’d have to pay $400 for 6 months turnaround XD.

Might as well share the other pespective then. Connor definitely has a point about the framing & speculation in Rattle’s video, as he’s coming right off the moral high ground of the Booster Case situation, so people should probably base their opinion off of both videos.
