The Giant Penny Stonkers™ Thread

What are Penny Stonkers?

A simple and unoriginal concept that many of us are already familiar with, Penny Stonkers - or Pennystonking - is buying multiple copies of cheap cards in the hope that they’ll eventually increase in value. Or because you just simply like the cards. Or both. Since this is 2026 and much of E4 is now either incredibly wealthy or still a frustrated wageslave, it’s hoped this will be a lighthearted and accessible way anyone can roll the dice on cards they enjoy while building new collections. (For the slightly more degenerate gamblers among us, see also: Moonshotting, Bag-Packing, and Excitable Speculative Hoarding Syndrome).

What defines a “Penny Stonker”?

It must be a genuine Pokémon TCG card in any language. It must cost ≤ $/£/€10 at time of purchase. (Exchange rates not factored since cards are generally cheaper in the US than elsewhere).

To keep an even playing field, the card should be / should have been accessible for anyone to purchase, and you should be able to buy more than one.

What should I post here?

In the vain hope that this thread isn’t an instantly ignored stagnant ghost town, it’s a place for sharing recent Penny Stonk purchases, current hoards (“collections”, whatever) and to showcase your favourite low-cost cards, variations, distribution methods, product availability etc. This thread is definitely not a subversive effort by myself, @wisewailmer and @banks to data-rake for profit.

Discover new cards, celebrate your wins, lament your price stagnations, and inevitably laugh at how Josh lost 75% value on his Kanda and Komiya 30th Pikachu singles.

normally we would lament the use of ai art on e4, but for this thread it feels appropriate

I had to learn what ‘transparent alpha channels’ are for that title image. Effort went in.

Here is a pic I had to steal from my own ig since I deleted the file on my phone. The spirit of the thread. What is once 25$, may one day be $50

The theme song to the nobel thread:

“Its immense size of Stonk is the reason for its popularity. Wailord watching is a favorite sightseeing activity in various parts of the world.”

I’m disappointed my OP didn’t convey more of a Vivaldi Concerto No. 1 La Primavera vibe

Penny stonking is a journey, FP (final post) will convey $500 norwegian lobster lunch. Verily, brethren! Walk by faith in the stonk, not by the sight of $1 chonk. (Bonkinians 1:13)

Also this one might be my current favorite since I honestly think it’s the 2nd best snorlax art behind only the legendary TRR ex

Radiant Pokemon are a good shout I think. They’re shiny Pokemon and that will never go out of style. Most of them in both English and Japanese can be grabbed for less than $10.

I’d say Amazing Rares. Amazed they are still so affordable! Quite a few can still be found for under $10. Unique rarity symbol and colour burst speckle holofoil. Really beautiful to look at.

Sorry, it’s bothering me.

Picking these up when I see them. One of my new favorites by my favorite artist.

Don’t forsee Stonks from this lol. Just a fun card

The only card I ever penny stonked on is also the only card in the entire hobby that hasn’t budged in 5 years

I was playing quite a lot back when this came out, the card was like 50 cents to a dollar, it was used as a four of in pretty much every single deck, so I just bought about 40 of them so I wouldn’t have to swap them between my decks.

Staple. Evergreen over multiple rotations. Iconic character. Surely this will be at least five bucks down the line I thought? Five years later… 50 cents to a dollar.
