Confess and find forgiveness for all your FOMO peccadillos
I really wanted a cheeto shaped like a dragon and may have overspent
I spent way too much time driving around to Targets, Walmarts, Barnes and Noble, anywhere I could think of looking for Championâs Path. Tens of hours, lots of gas, all to try and buy one of the worst sets ever.
Ended up finding a few pin sets where my best pull was an off center suspicious food tin, which I graded for the fun of it and it got an 8. I look at it when I start to fomo too much nowadays.
Forgive me Father for I have FOMOâd.
For all my vanity, I lustily sought the company of the gilded idol.
The value of which has hovered around 1500 JPY for the past year, and is now selling for double. For fear of missing out, I hath given in to craven desire and wanton release. Forgive me Arceus.
I FOMOâd like crazy back in 2019 over Scream Promos and I felt like if I dont buy them now they are gone forever. At the time 200$ for one of them felt super expensive.
The Pikachu with YOU Wagon promo.
TL;DR: None were available for years; then one popped up in 2017 that went for ~1.2k USD. After that, the floodgates opened, and thanks to FOMO, I was a bit too close to the gate and bid high on the third auction of one of these. If I had waited halve a year, I could have saved more than 600 USD. ![]()

Fomoâd with shining fates. Overpaid with gamestops msrp +10$ prices for a few premium collections and that set was such a let down that i still have like 4. Keeps reminding me to only buy sets i like instead of the hype.

75$ for these two⌠well at least I learned to not buy things as soon as they are released
-
~220$ for a beaten-up copy of unlimited Blaineâs Charizord (peak covid). So I learned to not buy what was currently hyped. Let things settle while temporarily enjoying less popular sides of the hobby.

Several Niche cards or Japanese promos: overpaid because I wanted them immediately, and nobody was auctioning them. 100% I do not recommend, since youâre almost surely buying at above market prices.
Im feeling fomo right now on all shadowleess and 1st edition base
Grading all of my junk slabs with CGC during covid boom
I completed my Japanese Black & White binder in 2023 at a time when trainer prices were skyrocketing and I was worried about being priced out. I wanted to just own the cards in mint condition and never have to worry about prices again or keep track. So after making a big sale, I paid top dollar for some trainer full arts.
Since then a bunch of them have gone down in price. Iâm super happy with my binder, itâs one of my favorites. But it was a good reminder to collect at my own pace and not get caught up in a hype.
I have more regrets about not fomoâing about some cards pre 2020 tbh
Oh I have a terrible one from a week or two ago. Because Iâm in the UK auctions tend to end at 3am on Monday mornings here.
A few months back a Raichu Undaunted #83 (I think they are called Primes) PSA 10 went up on ebay. Itâs a low pop card and I uumed and aahed even after an offer came up because the card last sold for around $500 and the seller wanted $800ish. I had decided to buy and it had sold in the last 5 minutes. Annoying.
One appeared on ZandGEmporium at $1800 BIN - not a chance I thought to myself, thatâs far too high.
Fast forward to a couple weekends ago, one was on ebay auction with ZandGEmporium, a new one. It stayed pretty low and I did my usual snipe by putting in a silly high figure in the final 10 second and waking up at 3am to bid of $1501.77 or similar. I won it for the $1.77 I put on the end of my silly bids.
Within seconds of winning their $1800 one was reduced to $1500 and sold within the time I was paying (I might be an overpaying fool but I do pay my dues) suggesting that someone else was panicking they wouldnât get to pick one up.
I even made their âLook at the prices of these now!â instagram post for paying so much. A couple of people calling out the shill bidding that they think has occurred and to be honest I find it a little suspicious that within seconds of the auction ending, weâre talking less than a minute, the price of the Buy It Now was down at $1500 and within a couple of minutes of that it had sold.
So now I have one but a tainted overpriced one that may have been shill bidded to the moon.
That feeling when you only have MO and soul-crushing regret but no FOMO. ![]()
If youâre worried about it being shillbid you can always see the bid history to at least see the feedback of the bidders. The price jumping in the last second isnt really something weird imo, plenty of people (me included) place snipes so they dont forget to bid or because it ends at an inconvenient time
Itâs annoying in that thereâs a chance I was pushed to overpay but youâre also right, I sniped last second didnât I? So thereâs every chance someone else out there is in the same boat and puts a high last second bid in and then we both take each other to over paying. Itâs only a pop 32 card in a 10 so FOMO kicked in for me.
I wouldnât be able to prove anything differently anyway and since I did it to myself I paid for it and I just need to accept I was being silly.
I may not even learn my lesson.
Dont knock yourself too hard for it <3 In hindsight its always easy to buy it earlier or later. The price for the prime psa 10 makes more sense then most modern chase card sales imo. At least this one is super low pop and will most likely stay very low. It is one of the best looking prime cards in my opinion and its still a lovely card ![]()
I see. Well, if you really have an appetite for something unique.
I fomoâd the Gym eevee/lution promos from SWSH era. When each one was released they were like $8 each and I thought it was a good idea to keep up with new releases. Within a year the 15 cards were closer to $1 each.
Also just your yearly friendly reminder that Pokemon is printing 10 billion ++ cards a year right now and this isnât sustainable year after year. Be patient, donât fomo, everything will be ok.
