Fair point about the lack of a card manufacturers name. Indeed, they might have been a promotional item produced in-house and therefore don’t have a card manufacturer associated with them.
I don’t remember seeing anything like these here in Japan during the late 1990s/early 2000s. But maybe I simply missed them at the time.
I found an ebay listing of some of those becket graded movie cards. Not that this is indicative of them being legitimate or not, but interesting nonetheless. The label says “bandai carddass zukan” but I also cannot find anything on them in the registry.
I agree, I’m also initially suspicious of any different holo pattern I haven’t seen before from this time period. But these match up exactly with some of my other Zukan prisms. The copyright info on the back is also the same with the exception of the dates that have been pointed out.
I actually hope we are able to determine that they are indeed legit cards. It would be a nice discovery of something from the original era that seemingly has been overlooked
Although I can’t say whether they are legit or not, I can tell you that I bought the lugia movie card from a trustworthy seller on yahoo that I’ve bought from quite a bit. He had all kinds of movie merchandise for sale on his profile. Popcorn buckets, posters, keychains, and whatever else you could think of that you might get as a promo from going to see a movie which makes me think that these had to have been given out at some theaters in Japan. This is all anecdotal so don’t put much stock in it, but it would be my guess.
Thanks for your input! Seems like a likely source of them. Hopefully we can get some first hand experience at some point from someone who remembers receiving them from the source.
Just a friendly update that the last bebe sold for $3500 (psa10) and the last cynthia (raw) just sold for 7500. New BUY prices for cynthia are 700,000 yen so that means they’ll prob start new raw sales prices above $8,000.
Pearls continue to climb leading to regional trophies like champs arena to boost to all time highs. Meanwhile, no action on the palace belt, but it will only be a matter of time.
Not really. The Palace Book was given out at gym battles which are a lot more prevelant (any tcg store could register as a gym). The Palace book was also reprinted as an sm-p promo during the sun and moon era. Finally, the Palace Book is a 5-Ban artwork so it has that 3-D cgi look and feel to it. Not a bad card to have (I own one), but if it sounds like I’m shitting on it compared to a Palace Belt, I guess I am.
Here is what the Palace Belt has going for it. The Palace Belt was only awarded at the Open Battle League Tournament and Hall of Fame events at the Battle Carnival 2012. The artwork was never reprinted, and it is a completely holographic card (not just a mirror reverse like the book). Finally, the Palace Belt was illustrated by Ryo Ueda. This artist is well known for illustrating artwork for prize cards, regional trophies, and national trophies. A few good examples would be Championship Arena (stadium & trainer trophies), Mysterious Pearl, Miracle Diamond, Wonder Platinum, No. 2 Trainer, Mew EX Play, and Champion’s League (stadium & trainer trophies).
Cool. So you prefer the promo palace book to the prize palace book, and you prefer that promo to the prize palace belt. Yes? Do you want to trade your palace belt for another one of those books so you can admire it every day?
