If someone offers me either Palace Book or Palace Belt, with the condition that the card cannot be traded/sold forever, I would take Palace Book.
If someone offers me either Palace Book or Palace Belt, and allows me to do whatever I want with the cards , I would take Palace Belt (because it is currently more expensive), sell it immediately, and buy a Palace Book.
“currently” meaning you anticipate that to change? Again, if that is your preference and belief, let’s do a trade! You are welcome to collect and like whatever you want. Some people would prefer a dunsparce common over a stormfront charizard. That wasn’t really what was asked in the original question I was responding to.
You’re welcome! I heard quite a few people say his chamionleague illustration was ugly as well. Can’t say I agree but it’s definitely good that there are enough cards out there for everyone to find something they appreciate.
I am trying to reply more holistically. Regardless of my preference, I would still take advantage of the market condition. If my item is more expensive (even if I don’t like it), I would ask for top-up in a trade. If monetary value is not a consideration, I would just take the item I like.
If you define the Japanese market as waifu cards and the two most recent sets then sure. But the vast majority of the Japanese market is quite stable and has been for awhile, since maybe beginning of the year not much has changed. Some of the most recent, most popular stuff is increasing–special arts from the most recent sets and waifu cards.
And yeah, Rayquaza/Duraludon sets have been out for two days. Not that uncommon for prices to increase right off the bat before settling and sometimes decreasing before stabilization.
I thought Marnie (SSV) would fall in price with the upcoming release of English Version (in Premium Tournament Box). But the Japanese version is still increasing in price now.
The price of other trainer cards are also increasing rapidly like the Extra Battle Day Lillie. I also saw Card Rush selling a raw copy of The Masked Royal (Full Art) at 4,280,000 Yen ($38,850 USD). I don’t remember seeing such a price before.
Collectors really love the waifu cards. Even for TCGs like Flesh and Blood, where the chase cards are typically cold foil equipment, quite a number of collectors (like myself) have been focusing on the rainbow foil hero cards. Latest favourite is Prism!
k thx dad. guess I meant “JAPANESE HOT RIGHT NOW MODERN MARKET.” not the entirety of the market including vintage cards
I understand ray/dura sets have been out for 2 days, but the pattern I have seen over the last few releases is the set typically tanks for the first 5-10 days of release. You can see this in amazon offers and prices. There seems to be less supply or both for both of these sets than a traditional release and the price is in fact skyrocketing OVER preorder prices, whereas usually it dips BELOW.
Look at Eevee Heroes. It settled to 7600-ish yen and is now at 120000 yen.
The last two weeks there has been a surge in modern interest across the board, including later S&M sets.
Not sure if you missed or added an extra zero in either of the numbers, but I’m pretty sure that’s closer to $3,885.
But yeah overall, the waifu card craze doesn’t surprise me that much. I’d like to say I’m ahead of the times, but it’s in all likelihood that I’m just a simp hahahaha! Oh well. You won’t catch me paying 800$ for a marnie card. Not even 200. I don’t really know what to think long term in regards to holding value. However, I get the feeling this trend won’t diminish, but I’d also rather invest in more areas where I have more interest and I know are more rare. Modern product still feels ripe for reprints and more market saturation. Also I’m willing to bet there are good numbers in the PSA backlog as well, for those that want to grade the waifus.
Also, it’s good to be wary of playability in the meta as well. At least when I started buying FA trainers, that was the biggest reason for a price drop. Brigette was a great example. Good waifu card, high playability, but when it rotated, the price plummeted to like 5$ per card. Same with skyla.
Japanese waifus in fact have always “stonked” more than english counterparts, english stonking on waifus is very recent actually so not much a big news there.
Besides those trainer cards, what else is stonking?
Mandarake does have some nice auctions occasionally. The recent snap articuno was auctioned there. There are cards and items on other sites, but I did not find them to have a great selection or worth my time.
Dream league is an amazing set with awesome pull rates per box I scooped up everything I could sub $100. Remix bout has certainly been up and coming for a while. I think there was a significant supply glut in Japan for quite some time that has finally been chewed through. They were selling for $60ish/box for a long time. I do know Charlie bought a ton of these boxes in the past few Months. What’s not to like with charizard/venusaur/Blastoise tag team cards in every box.
Just an update that a lot of Unikarps keep popping up raw in the Japanese market, but they never last very long. Seems the market is still eager to gobble them up. Will be interesting to see if price increases are due if collectors (or flippers) are pouncing on them at their current pricepoints.
