people on the English thread are discussing the disaster of the English Gold Star Dogs and i’m really wondering how the Japanese copies are still relatively cheap compared to the english ones.
the Suicune english has a pop of 200 in PSA 10 and maybe 1000 in psa 9. The unlimited Japanese is POP 16 in PSA 10.
isn’t clear that Japanese are the way to go in the Gold Star Dogs and arguably in all GS to be honest haha.
The Japanese Gold Stars have tiny PSA 10 pops, especially the unlimiteds. I haven’t checked prices lately but I opted for them over English just to get the art and designs at a fraction of the price of the English equivalents. (Plus… silver border over yellow…)
Japanese Gold Stars (like Neo Shinings) have been this way for so long that I’m starting to think it may always be the case. One example: an ungraded 1ED Latios sold a couple of days ago for 201k yen, just 10 days after a PSA 10 copy went for $2210 with PWCC (though to be fair it had a lot of edge wear).
I have a couple of theories, but essentially they boil down to the demand for them in Japan being greater than it is in the western market. Logically, this should only decrease the price if enough Japanese buyers are reluctant to buy from abroad/if the markets are discrete.
As for unlimited vs. 1ED: unlimited may be rarer in some cases, but it usually will not go for more than 1ED (with some notable exceptions).
This really old thread says pull rate for shinings was 1:60. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a few other sources say that you’re not guaranteed a shining in an entire box of Neo 3.
Haven’t seen any reliable data, just snippets like this, so take it fwiw.
Thanks a lot for the answer my friend! I actually opened it last evening haha. In my mind, the occasion justified me burnig a few bucks
I ended up pulling a Raikou as holo. Not quite a Shining Gary, but could’ve been worse. And the non-holos showed me once again that Revelation is rightfully one of the fan favorite vintage sets. Incredible art with great variation.
No ragrets!
Does anyone have any idea about the number of copies of this card were made?
Curious about whether that price is reasonable or not (out of my price range in any case!) page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e512916041
Are you’re talking about the Gym Badge Promos, such as the Flannery (Asuna) and Winona (Nagi)? I’m a big fan of these and, as cheap as these can be, they are pretty hard to find. Would recommend
Yes those and the pokemon as well such as the dragonair. The art is stunning and the release was limited. They all seem to be selling cheaper than I would expect.
Definitely some amazing art that is exclusive to that promotional release. I was finding the Flannery promo for 300 yen NM which is a steal any day of the week. And as usual with Japanese promos, they’re often slept on and sell under the radar. Good thing we have our super secret lair here in the Giant Japanese Market Thread.
Winona and Flannery are hardly ever for sale. Flannery sold PSA 10 not long ago for quite a bit. I almost exclusively collect Japanese so im glad these are a little more slept on.
I returned to the hobby six months ago, and I have a question about price relativity and what to make of this. I’d love to hear the opinions of people more experienced than me!
I’m currently living in Seoul, and it’s been quite interesting to see how Korean Shiny Star V has gone from being sold at 50,000krw ($44) msrp on release to 100,000 ($89) on the second-hand market in a fairly short amount of time. However, single cards have stayed relatively the same, and you can comfortably buy a Shiny Charizard VMax SSR locally for 150,000krw-175,000krw ($134-$156) and a Shiny Charizard V for about 100,000krw-125,000krw ($89-$111). So, you can get the two most popular chase cards from the set for less than the price of three booster boxes.
What does this mean? Does it mean the price of the booster boxes is overinflated? Does it mean people are selling the single cards for too little? Or, is the price right and people just love the experience of opening packs?
As I said, I haven’t been around that long so I’d love to hear from other collectors as I’m sure this has happened a lot in the past across different sets! Thanks everyone!
There are many factors at play with modern now, lots of price fluctuations, etc., regardless of language.
But I think one thing has remained the same as before… Buying modern singles is ALWAYS a better value than opening packs, on average, if there are specific cards you want to get. Regardless of if it’s playable trainer cards or the new Mega Shiny Charizard VMax Tag Team, this is almost always the case.
