Do not underestimate the power of waifus and the pocket depths of nerds.
I knew the waifus were popping but 20 grand for a SM set card is pure insanity. I thought the extra battle day was sub 10k
買取 means their buy price but there is no way they are giving you 6.5 million for a raw card.
They want you to come down to their shop and then make it feel like it wasn’t worth your time to leave there empty-handed so you’ll just accept their crappy offer.
Okay that part might be somewhat conspiratorial but they are guaranteed to lowball you or come up with some excuse to not give you that money.
Another tactic they like to employ is if you sell a lot of cards at once they will give you an overall price, but when you check the breakdown you will see the least desirable ones they will offer you barely anything compared to the price of the others. Like maybe they will offer your 1000 yen for one card and you think that’s a good price, but then you’ll see they are offering you 5 yen for something else. But you’ll just accept their offer because you waited like an hour in their shop to get their evaluation and it doesn’t seem worth it to have to take back the seemingly worthless cards. Although they will still put those 5 yen cards up for sale for like 200 yen for 300 yen in their store or put them in some overpriced bulk package.
Gotta remember these shops aren’t employing experts and are okay just trying to get your money. Places like Book-Off are even worse than dedicated card shops. That’s why it’s known as Rip-Off in the foreign community lol.
Selling your stuff for a fair price in Japan at any mainstream place is really not easy/fair at all.
Would you say $210 is a good deal for this? All in really good condition according to the seller. There’s also a coin that’s listed for like $40-$80 on eBay included. Not sure what it’s worth though.
Thanks for the response. This is really interesting, it seems that many people (myself included) have a poor understanding of how these Japanese buy lists actually work! Its a fantastic way for them to put those numbers out there tho, regardless of if they honour it (also whether thats good overall is questionable )
Im not going to research it as i dont have time but you can basically look up the prices of the WEB cards and then take an average value of the VS cards split into pokemon and then the trainers as most of each type go for a very similar price and then work it out from there.
My thought process looking at the pics:
-
Individually, some of these cards may cost a lot more, specially the WEB Charmeleons or the Raichu, even some of the VS cards. As a group offer (bulk) the price reduces significantly.
-
Am I looking to complete a VS binder collection or a WEB series binder collection? If yes, then I would look for deals which offer more of the common cards from either set. This is to drive the price down per card that you pay to stretch your 200 bucks. I would focus on just one of the sets.
-
If I want to get a taste of either of these sets, then I think this is a fair deal for the cards. These are roughly about 50 cards which will come to 2 bucks and change per cards.
But, it is a bit of aimless buying if I think logically. I am getting a little bit of 2 different sets and to complete either of them, I will probably have to spend more. If I want the cards for an artist binder, then it should not matter, I would buy them.
Cheers!
I ended up buying them after doing some research. Seems like the cards would cost me about $400 if bought individually, and that doesn’t include taxes, which would easily be another $100 on top, assuming I bought them all from Japan with free shipping + 25% VAT. I also want to complete both sets, and they are some of my absolute favourites, so with that in mind $210 shipped felt like a screaming deal. This lot was a fantastic start to the WEB and VS collections, now it’s time to track down some minty holos from the sets!
Nice. These are indeed some of the best sets. VS is just a wonderful and unique set to collect but WEB is a bit easier to finish I guess due to less cards and it has reprints of some of the most iconic cards. Congratulations on the deal and good hunting for the rest of the sets. Hope to see your collection updates someday.
Cheers!
Assuming these cards are in mint-binder condition, I think you made an excellent purchase.
The VS set is unique. The set is so large that it extends to theatre limited editions, such as the holo Latias, Latios, and non-holo Espeon. Aya Kusube’s art direction for Lance’s Pokemon (Charizard, Kingdra, etc.) is excellent, even though they suffer from the non-holo curse as they are commons. The upside is you get to see her artworks clearer.
The WEB set is even better - full of rich history. My favourites include the Unikarp, Masaki Gengar, Dark Charizard, and Dark Blastoise.
Vaguely related, but I placed an 8 card order on Yuyu-tei via Buyee on Monday and it was in my hands on Thursday by lunch. That’s crazy to me. For reference I live in Texas…
That’s crazy to me too. Yet it’s taking weeks for PWCC to ship items from their vault.
That’s actually what inspired me to post that
That is crazy. Whenever I ship from my middleman shit always gets stuck in alaska foREVER
I swear the second I paid for “buyee air” it immediately appeared in Alaska, then the next day it was in Houston. Wild.
Checks out since I believe Buyee is a part of Tenso (no idea why they don’t just let me use one website though)
Reading this conversation and sorry but can’t resist the opportunity to flex my VS and Web sets. Both incredible but if had to pick I’d go with VS as I love each Trainer’s pokemon being assigned to the same artist.
Now this is podracing collecting
As much as I enjoy graded cards, there’s no better way to enjoy Pokémon cards than a complete set in a binder
