日本のマーケット部分 The Giant Japanese Market Thread

ebay is actually cheaper than yahoo for modern Japanese cards now

Even the Charizard reprint and the original base set Japanese Charizard are getting somewhat comparable in price. On US Ebay you can get one PSA 9 original for the price of two PSA 10 reprints. I understand that buying the original raw requires digging through lower condition copies, not everyone is looking to spend ~1000 on a PSA 9 card, not everyone collects Japanese vintage, the supply might be different and the reprint does look great. Just for my personal collection goals I’ll go with the original given these prices.

Very true.

I was comparing the Japanese PSA 9 Stormfront Charizard to the PSA 10 25th and the prices are pretty similar. Wondering if it made sense.

Having said that I just bit the bullet on a CGC 9.5 25th

How much would this card cost if it was near mint & not graded?

If you can find one for sale? I imagine it would be anywhere between 5k and 10k, depending on condition.

I listed a psa 10 and 14k was the highest offer. Under that there are numerous people who want it at a slightly lower price.

I would be very careful with this type of business “model”. Because you are predicting such small margins, one small unfortunate could erode any profits made in a large amount of time. It is way to risky to have such cut throat margins with so many unpredictable events happening
For example:
-mail gets lost/stolen
-cards come with dents
-60% of the cards grade at 9’s
-ebay returns

And if all this goes to plan, what’s to say the market changes and moves lower and now have to sell at a loss anyway.

For me, I make sure that even if I get a 9 I am 10% Into the money after ebay fees, shipping costs, cost of grading, and cost of the card.

That is only when I make the decision to go into a card or not.

Yea its definitely risky business. Theres opportunity there, but it can be difficult to capitalize on for the reasons youve mentioned. For many modern cards, the price of raw mint is => psa 9, so its kinda 10 or bust lmao!

Exactly as well as if there is a fluctuation in the market and you are already deep into it cost wise. Let me give you an example…

“Sam” buys Giratina V Alt Art at current market value: $295 ($320.65 after fees)
What is his best/worst case scenarios?

Scenario 1 BEST CASE:
Sam submits to PSA at Bulk rate at $15
Grades a 10
Sam then sells into eBay auction fire sale and final hammer price is $740
eBay fees: 740 x .86 = 636.40
Cost Basis: 335.65
Net: 636.40 - 15 - 320.65= $300.75
RETURN 300/335.65 = 189.6%

Scenario 2 Most Likely outcome:
Sam submits to PSA at Bulk rate at $15
Grades a 9 (BIG SAD)
Sam then sells into eBay auction fire sale and final hammer price is $300
eBay fees: 265 x .86 = 258
Cost Basis: 335.65
Net: 258 - 15 - 320.65= -$77.66
RETURN -107.75/335.65 = -23.1%

Scenario 3 WORST CASE:
Sam submits to PSA at Bulk rate at $15
Grades a 8 (BIGGEST SAD)
Sam then sells into eBay auction fire sale and final hammer price is $265
eBay fees: 265 x .86 = 227.90
Cost Basis: 335.65
Net: 227.90- 15 - 320.65= -$107.75
RETURN -107.75/335.65 = -32.1%

Scenario 4 WORST WORST:
Sam submits to PSA at Bulk rate at $15
PSA damages the card resulting in a total loss… But good news PSA will pay out!
Bad news… PSA only pays out the amount listed in the submission. Sam decided to save some $$ on the front end by not claiming the correct amount and instead only receives the $5 in claimed insurance.

Sam decide to drive to McDonald to buy a Giratina V funded McFlurry…
They tell him their machines are down.

Sam leaves McDonald thinking all that has happened to him.
He remembers the good times he had working at Home Depot, where making $100 a day was as easy as anything.
Now he wastes time and energy every day speculating and looking for the next moonbreon.
Sam cries himself to sleep that night.
“Never again” he whispers.
“Never again will I flip modern English Pokemon cards…”

TLDR
With modern (especially English) it is a 10 or bust game as you mentioned

Curious if that gets paid for? Last public 9 sold on HA in December for $66k

Still feel like half the issue for Japan is supply.

Same. I knew a few people bidding on that 8. I think that 9 went pretty low, which isn’t uncommon for heritage. I sold a 9 for 100k awhile back.

100k. Man, I’ve gotta get my money up. Lol. It’s a psa 9 card or a 2023 electric Porsche. Shit.
