There was a Instagrammer calling out Freshmagma on the sales. It does seem suss that the two cheaper ones were relisted, and its the 2nd time this month freshmagma has relisted a box at a higher price after being sold.
Either way its worked that there’s no cheaper boxes available.
It should be easy to check if they are the same physical boxes being relisted or if they are separate boxes. Where the WotC logos on the shrinkwrap line up will vary from from box to box.
Either way, $20k seems really insane. Weren’t these like $12k last week? lol
He was a major distributor for WOTC back in the day, and then suddenly he wasn’t.
As for people calling him out on Instagram, in my book anyone who ‘calls people out’ on Instagram is more often than not a major red flag themselves. He’s been selling them for years and has only been a gentleman to deal with from my perspective. He knows what he’s doing and been around for years if there was something fishy going on I’m sure we would have known about it.
It’s not like Base Set was a limited edition set lol. They printed millions of boxes. One guy having sold 10 of them isn’t that crazy. Good thing for him that he kept them until now. Because the price trajectory has been hilariously high – way more so than any other box, AFAIK.
I’ve asked him many times how many he has but he keeps his cards close to his chest. Last time he said he was getting low but I feel like maybe that was the businessman talking.
I never really tried to put a number on it but let’s imagine back in the day there would almost certainly have been lorries and trucks that are absolutely full of base boxes being delivered to and fro. Now imagine how many cases you could fit into just one truck. Now imagine your depot has five trucks worth of stock in it and suddenly you can’t sell them through official channels any more!
Indeed. I’ve bought a lot from him over the years, including base. One of the most professional and friendly guys to deal with.
One time I was bidding on an item of his, I think it was a lot of 40 1st ed jungle packs, I didn’t have the time to make the payment until 2 days after the auctions ending due to a vacation. He told me “that’s fine, enjoy your vacation”. He’s that kind of a guy.
Yeah, but the 1st Edition Base box increase makes more sense because 1st Edition Base cards have been spiking like crazy. But Base Unlimited cards haven’t gone up at all.
I thought that, with the exception of the starters, Base Unlimited has mostly plateaued over the past couple months? Base 1st Edition has gone up dramatically across the board, not just the starters in specific grades.
No doubt starters are a big factor but it’s been all the cards - all have surged % wise. Chansey is over $1000, Raichu is over $1000, clefairy is knocking on the door. Not to mention some psa 10 unlimited common cards are going for $200++
You can go to my website zandgemporium.com and see base set unlimited set growth for the past 4 months - blown all other WOTC sets out of the water (except for maybe 1st ed base I don’t track that).
Interesting. I didn’t realize it was still increasing. I’ve been regularly tracking buylist prices for all sets WotC-EX Series since March and the prices for Base Unlimited (mostly) haven’t budged since June. That’s on the raw card side of things, but it’s interesting to see that PSA-graded Base Unlimited has still been going up.
That is true. But it just makes me curious why people were hesitant to spend more than $100-$150 on Base Set boxes for over a decade after its release, but now there are people willing to pay $15k ($20k?) for a box. I guess nostalgia only kicked in for it within the past five years?
100,000 seems like a high estimate, but it wouldn’t shock me. It’s one of those things that there are definitely undiscovered troves of out there. I bought a Base Set box at a flea market for $25 in 2009ish and I remember the guy having a giant plastic storage container full of them (and Jungle/Fossil/Rocket). And when I sold it for $179 in 2010ish, it sat for weeks before selling (and I spent most of that $179 on an MP/HP Unlimited Timetwister, which I still have – kind of funny that it’s ‘only’ $2000 now). This stuff was tough to give away 10 years ago – I bet there are a ton of people sitting on these who don’t yet know what they have. And I’m sure the market will absorb that supply (unless it’s truly gigantic).
