Ya and I would say that the majority of people back then were either kids (don’t know how to preserve cards) or players (played with and damaged cards) so I wouldn’t be surprised if the pops on these stay extremely low. Basically it feels like it was the least hoarded/collected era.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I think the playability factor is something that people under-account for when thinking about the amount of mint copies of a card in circulation. While competitive players obviously account for a very tiny fraction of Pokémon sales, I would wager they account for a pretty hefty portion of people who understand the importance of taking care of their cards. LOTS of LvXs and holos in the DPPt era were heavily played at one point or another, which means there probably aren’t a whole lot of mint copies out there.
It’s the popularity report not the population report and it lags behind by more than a year now. If you think the majority of the mint supply is currently graded I think you’re in for an extremely rude awakening
I don’t think it’ll be much of a “rude awakening” because it doesn’t affect me one way or the other… I’m not hedging my life savings on random PSA 10 DP-era holos exploding in value or anything lol. Don’t own a single one and very well may never; just spitballing.
For the sake of discussion, though, what’s your rationale in saying that you think there’s a hefty amount of raw mint DPPt stuff out there? It seems like over the last year, people have graded pretty much everything they can; only an idiot would grade, like, XY-era EXs over DPPt-era holos, and I see plenty of people doing that. From my perspective, if people were sitting on these, they would have sent them in over the past year, unless they have a completely warped understanding of the market and somehow think 9s and 10s of shitty new VMAXs and rainbow rares will hold value better than Gen IV stuff. 9s and 10s of DPPt-era holos are an easy sell and worth WAY more than the raw copies… if somebody were holding them, what incentive would there be not to send them in? It’s certainly worth it!
Do you think there’s an appreciable amount of raw mint/gem mint ex-era holos out there, as well, despite a difference of only a couple years?
I have no financial stake in this at all and it’s not a hill I plan to die on. Just think people are underestimating Gen IV stuff, mint holos in particular. Who knows, I could be totally off base.
This may have been discussed before, but I find it kind of sad that STAFF Prerelease cards are no longer being made. From what I heard, they were canceled probably due to card store owners selling them at high prices on the open market. Their cancellation increases the investment potential of existing STAFF cards, and even without their cancellation, I think that these cards are underrated due to their rarity. Also, I do not have a large stake in these cards, and I am just sharing my opinion. Will STAFF Prerelease cards ever come back?
This right here. Same goes for hgss era. I could still buy packs in stores in 2018 or so. Especially when you look at the print numbers they published there were still billions of set cards printed at the lowest point of the tcg. Pop reports for these should definitely been taken with a grain of salt. Me and my gf bought some platin/hgss cards in 2010 just for fun and nostalgia and they’re still sitting absolutely mint in my binders. We weren’t 10 years old then anymore.
edit. I’m not saying they’re not underappreciated right now, though.
Not really sure if this is the right thread for this, but I got a pretty amusing email today from Collectors Cache. For only $29.97 I can become a Pokemon millionaire just like Logan Paul! Lmao
