Going through my sales/purchases last year for tax purposes (I’m cutting it very close, haha) and was reminded of some auctions I won last August…I paid $160 for a near complete Platinum Base Set (all Lv.Xs, some secrets in 9-10 quality) and a near complete ex Power Keepers set (most exes, in 9-10 quality) for $315. Crazy how low those prices seem now, especially the Platinum Base Set. The seller was auctioning off a bunch of DP and ex near complete sets, claimed he opened cards from boxes at release, put them in binders and never touched them again. Based on the collections I bought, I’d say that’s the case. I also bid on a near complete ex Emerald set, but didn’t win. If I recall, I was the second highest bidder and the auction ended at ~$600. Using some deductive reasoning, some months ago I think I figured out that @hisoka107 was the winner of the auction and the Deoxys ex 93 graded a PSA 10. It’s been on my mind since the fall: was that you who won that auction, Hisoka?? If it was, congrats!
I find it best to ignore the SMR, I’ve only ever found it to be very inaccurate for Pokémon.
Their prices on Neo Genesis cards are all over the place, showing PSA 10 Heracross at $6k, Feraligatr #4 at $12k, Slowking at $15k which all feel like they’ve been plucked out of thin air. It even lists Lugia at $130k despite the last sale being $76k.
Another example of their SMR data being meaningless is for Expedition Pichu #22 which they list as $150 in PSA 10 - I don’t think one of those has sold for below $200 since late 2018 and they’re now approaching $3k.
Based on a certain number it looks like this one was Express graded recently while the copy that Charizard came 24 got was a 4700 number. Which means it likely was in bulk. I’d like to see the upcharge for that one lol.
I forgot to mention the cards were raw, whoops actually, what gave me the idea was seeing one of your PSA submission returns videos (returns 12 & 13) where you mentioned you bought an Emerald set for around $550, which was around the price the auction went for. It could be pure coincidence, but you then showed off a few exes from the near complete listing. And the Deoxys looked like it had a good shot at getting a 10 from the pictures I saw, low and behold the one you sent in got a 10. I could be completely wrong though haha, but as soon as I saw your video I thought, dang, so you were the one who outbid me!
That would be. I’ve been snagging up WOTC and then ex complete sets. At first I went after less desired WOTC sets and singles, but when the market got too hot, I moved onto ex series complete sets. At the time I figured that ex prices would remain stagnate because when I first chasing them, they didn’t have a big following. I was clearly wrong haha. I thought that I could focus on grading WOTC cards in PSA 8, 9 and 10 for better returns (to buy ex PSA 10s) than if I went after raw ex cards. I bought 12-15 near or complete ex sets and they have paid off.
I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have graded that card myself.
