Hah, I wasn’t that smart! I assumed others would come out of the woodwork after the success of the first auction.

And I’m sure these won’t be the last of this kind either

I find it super interesting how differently people in MTG and Pokemon value signatures. In MTG, many of the more common signatures devalue the card. And artist proofs (which are generally limited to 50 copies) are basically worthless – artist proofs of random cards can be had for $2-$3 a piece. Many artists will also paint/draw gorgeous art on the back of proofs (for instance, search “amy weber artist proof” on eBay). But people just don’t value them very highly. You can buy artist proofs with hand-drawn sketches for basically nothing.

I understand why Pokemon collectors value signature/original artwork more than MTG collectors – it’s just the extent of the difference that is remarkable to me. We’re not talking about $100 vs $1000 – we’re talking about $5 vs $10,000; that sort of magnitude of difference. Those PWCC sale prices are way higher than I would’ve guessed, even knowing how rabid Pokemon TCG collectors are over signatures.

It’s primarily because pokemon artists are heavily restricted. They aren’t allowed to draw Pokémon unless sanctioned, which is very rare/exceptional. Where mtg can just sign and design away!

@zorloth I was thinking about this recently too.

I first started playing MTG in 2001 around 7th Edition. I now own full sets of 7th and 8th Edition, and I flip through the binder pages every once in a while. It is a magical thing to own a whole set of something from your childhood, when my decks from back in the day were comprised of the weakest and most common cards in the set.

To this day, I have no interest in obtaining signed cards of my favorite MTG artworks. For whatever reason, the same cannot be said about my interest in signed Pokemon cards.

I think for me it boils down to the purpose of the cards. In addition to the beautiful artwork on Pokemon cards, the Pokemon showcased on the cards elicit very strong memories of the anime, video games, etc. When I look at artwork from my old MTG cards, I only remember the games that I played with family and friends.

The nostalgic attachment that I have for Pokemon and MTG could not be more different. And that nostalgic value influences my interest in signatures.

I am sure that this phenomenon is different for everyone, or maybe it would break down if I actually owned expensive MTG cards with historical value (e.g., signed Power 9 is desirable in some cases).

I didn’t think I’d be into signatures but ever since I picked up a pikachu Arita signed sketch card I’ve been hooked. Idk what it is…it’s like a whole new sect of Pokémon collecting. There are a dozen on eBay right now I want to get (if I had the money). The signatures are also cool and unique from one another. Dr. Sameji and Imakuni’s are my favorite. I love that Arita does sketches though. That to me is just so cool to have a card he designed and then look down to the right and seeing a sketch he just drew for you of that same Pokémon.

The winner of this auction and last auction were probably fighting over the last one. Thanks for the recap super helpful!

relevant video i watched a couple days ago
I know this is a huge collection and isn’t necessarily the norm with MTG, but to see so many signed cards in one collection is pretty crazy. You never see anything like it in Pokemon.

He gets into the “bulk” boxes at around 2 minutes, but theres signed cards throughout the entire video series.

This is a cool one on eBay right now. Big money with still 6 days left:

I’m surprise Rusty didn’t know that before hand. I thought that was pretty clear it it wasn’t an actual card. It’s still a custom sketch drawn and signed by the artist in possible limited amounts at 2004 worlds. Still a damn a cool piece to have.

That’s a lot of money to spend on something you know little about. The label could definitely be clearer but at the same time it’s probably good to take a couple seconds looking at the hi-res scans if you’re dropping 5 figures on something unknown

I also didn’t know PSA wasn’t grading FPO cards anymore. Interesting.

These were definitely tempting on the outset i did a bit more homework and left alone.
