The last few months have had many ups and downs for me and my collection. I’ve always been primarily a WOTC/EX era sealed product collector (mainly booster packs) and had many years of enjoyment from this.
Recently i’ve been coming across more and more resealed packs which of course i’m not new to as I think most collectors have come across at least one in their lifetime but its just really starting to get ot me as its resulting in me constantly getting money tied up in return processes and i’m even losing trust in most likely genuine purchases on the open market.
As a whole its just really made me change my outlook on my collection and that key thing the enjoyment has started to dwindle
What i’m asking is has there ever been a time where you have had to change things up and pursue something new and actually found you enjoyed it more?
I’m very tempted to sell majority of my collection in sealed and look at either buying actual booster boxes rather than loose boosters or building a PSA collection of my favourite cards as its always been my secondary goal. i’ve even been tempted by the battlefields of modern speculation!
Sorry this might come across like a negative post but it would be good just to here some stories or some advice
I’m moving the other direction – looking to sell off sealed product over the next year or two and instead collect the pack art sets from people I trust. If I had ample display space the boxes would hold more appeal but if I’m keeping them tucked away I prefer individual cards. I agree there is too much dastardly behavior in the sealed market it’s a huge turn-off vs collecting graded cards.
Oh, and I kinda just realized I’ve been less keen on Charizards. I used to like having the chase Charizards graded but if I have them in my binder sets already it’s starting to make less sense to me. I think I was initially drawn to collecting PSA 10 Charizards because they were the ones everyone wanted as a kid including me, but lately I’d rather move the money they cost into other cards.
This is a surprisingly big move in my collecting goals because I was even hoping to get the Base Charizard in 10 eventually and have spent quite a bit on others. I’m proud of accomplishing most of this goal and of course it helps that the cards have increased in value but the emotional connection and desire to collect isn’t there like it used to be. As an “investment” I doubt collecting more Chansey cards and ideally Snap cards will compare to Charizards but that’s not priority.
you’ve hit the nail on the head there for me in terms of investment not being the priority. i think the problem with seeing pokemon as investments is that it brings with it people who are willing to take advantage of others and it can kill the enjoyment out of what you purchase. Don’t get me wrong i enjoy knowing something i own will go up in value rather than down but i don’t let it dictate what i buy.
I think i just need to have a look at what i have got and go with what makes me the happiest to own! appreciate the replies so far!
Sometimes its not always the best decision to dump everything. i would wait and sit on it before you decide to do anything. Also you can put a pause on your sealed collection and go collect something else for awhile.
Definitely think hard about selling. I love packs as well but I quit buying because I know (we all know) they are re-sealed or weighed. It sucks for sure, but definitely don’t quit
