“The idea behind Tag Team Pokémon-GX was to come up with ‘dream teams’ of Pokémon that could unite and battle together in a way unique to the TCG that would really surprise and delight our players. We designed the pairs to get players excited to imagine just what kind of attacks the different combinations of Pokémon could use,” Pokémon Trading Card Game game director Atsushi Nagashima told IGN in an email interview. “With this pair, we wanted to combine one of the strongest Pokémon in the Pokémon universe with one of the weakest Pokémon of the same type. We also thought it would be fun since there is such a huge difference in their sizes and they are a bit of a mismatch.”
Crossing my fingers for a “saddest Pokémon ever” team of Cubone and Mimikyu.
Also obligatory @stephneechan tag, the queen of the karps!
For me it raises the question “how much is too much” in terms of HP, damage, etc. for the game. We’ve seen power creeps many times over the course of the game but there are just so many ways to utilize these cards at their full power because of cards like Magnezone in standard for Zekrom/Pikachu or Blastoise in expanded for Wailord/Magikarp and the downside of 3 prizes doesn’t seem to be a huge deterrent at first glance with their massive HP and cards like Acerola.
