Seller purposely delayed shipping? (eBay)

Recently I made a purchase on eBay and it seems the selller purposely waited until the 10th day to finally ship it out. I reached out to them on the 9th day to see if it was shipped and they claimed it was “shipped a few days ago”, even though it wasn’t marked shipped. Am I being unreasonable to think it should have been shipped sooner and that he was at least partially lying? On the 10th day he marked it shipped with a tracking number (which wasn’t the case before) and so he definitely didn’t ship it earlier like he claimed in the message to me.

When I looked at the ad, I see that they’re probably taking advantage of the 10 day window, but I now I feel I won’t be buying from this seller again as I feel he did this on purpose.

What do you think? Is it unfair for me to leave neutral or even negative feedback on this? I’ve never had this issue before until now, usually all sellers I’ve dealt with ship within 5 days or less.

I’d put a negative or a low shipping rating, solely because they lied.
If they were honest and I wasn’t in a rush it wouldn’t impact feedback for me, but they were not.
It’s your decision.

That’s fair, yeah it’s just the “ethics” of it that kind of bothers me more than anything. This was the message he sent me Saturday:

And then this morning it was finally marked shipped, but the label was only created only last night:

Perhaps they meant that it will be shipped on Monday? Considering the seller is Japanese, my money is on a translation quirk. Having the label created on the 30th (Sunday) would probably mean it was collected/dropped off the next day.

Either way, they did specify a 10 day handling time, so I think negative feedback would be harsh in this case.

I agree with @subcat. The seller did specify a 10-day shipping window in their listing and abided by this note. It’s inconvenient, but it is technically OK.

Best to shop elsewhere in the future.

I’m not sure what you purchased, but maybe it was dropshipped.

It’s also worth mentioning that some Japanese eBay sellers are open about getting the product from elsewhere to then send to you. Wouldn’t be surprised if them saying “shipped Monday” meant it was shipped to them on Monday and it’s a translation thing. That’s very likely why they have a 10 day lead time as well - because they need to wait for it to get to them from wherever they’re drop shipping from.

Thanks, was not aware of the drop shipping concept in relation to what they’re selling, but that makes sense. The idea concerning translation is also fair.

I’ll just be more mindful of these things in the future :grinning:

This sounds like a classic drop shipper. Negative feedback would be a bit much imo. But I think its more than fair to leave a lower star rating for shipping time, and even mention that the seller is a drop shipper in the feedback.

Says 10 days, shipped in the window. Not the best, but just find another seller next time and ignore this one. Negative feedback is too much, they did everything they said they would.

honestly not uncommon with japanese proxy accounts. they have to go and buy your card from mercari first and sometimes that may take a while to arrive. that’s also assuming they can find it for a price that allows them to make enough profit right away.

Do you not read good? Marked in description as ships in 10 days.

I have some orders, particularly from Japan that ships in 5-10 business days. Good ratings so I don’t really care.

Sounds like nothing nefarious like resell at higher prices, so not sure why so impatient.

I’m happy if the seller actually ships, have had issues in past and currently too, (after buying items, they ghost. Even us sellers with Japanese products, terrible sellers don’t ship).

I saw the 10 days after the fact that there was no update on shipping at all until I reached out to the seller on day 9. He then told me it was shipped on Monday which appears to be a mistranslation on his part. So my impression was that he had purposely waited until the 10th day even though it sounded like he had shipped it earlier in the week when it fact he actually shipped it on the 10th day which happened to be a Monday.

So I wasn’t trying to be impatient, it’s just there was zero communication on his part for nearly 10 full days and I didn’t pay attention to the 10 day handling until I checked after the fact. So it was at least partially my mistake for not paying attention to that when I was buying, but also I usually get at least some communication from sellers (especially from Japan) within a couple days.
