Not gunna lie, I too would be pretty upset if I didn’t finish my neo gen set. Bought it for $100 last year, I can’t think of any other card I own that has increased more like this.
If this says anything get Slowkings and Yanmas while you can!
The T17 is infinitely more popular than the T18 because it has become something of an urban legend overnight due to the ridiculous difficulty to get it in a PSA 10. Does it make sense in a vacuum? No, but the market doesn’t act in vacuum.
Ironically enough, the reason why the PSA 9 T17 sells for considerably more than the PSA 9 T18 is because the pop of the PSA 10 T17 is significantly lower, even though the pop of the PSA 9 T17 is higher than the PSA 9 T18. How’s that for a brain twister?
Basically, people will be people, and people acting like people is what establishes the market. Call it “FOMO” or whatever, but it is what it is.
Funny thing is, I actually prefer the art of the T18 to T17.
I feel some of the discourse regarding the price of the card has been quite negative in tone, which seems counter to what the spirit of this forum is supposed to be. For some, this is a collectable. For some, it’s a business. For some, it’s an investment. For many it’s elements of all three, and those categories probably aren’t absolute for anyone. This is a place where those who have an interest in Pokemon TCG can meet and discuss openly. What is “overpaying” or “stupid” to one person is no big deal to another. Either because they are in a different financial situation or because they have a different emotional attachment to a card, or love the artwork, or just because it makes them happy. Let’s assume the person who bought the card is lurking here and probably thrilled and excited about their purchase else they would not have bought it. Let’s not shame them for it, or anyone else who pays what they want for something.
We can feel worry for them if they just graduated from college, are unemployed and used their federal stimulus check for the purchase. Or we can feel indifference or even jealous if the purchaser is a businessman with plenty of savings and disposal income and to whom the purchase is a drop in the bucket. But let’s recognize that discussion of “market value” or “financial advice” is something different and try to separate that from judgment. Personally, I think the value of the card is most probably over-hyped. And I don’t think the market value is $2k all of the sudden just because of one transaction. My “financial advice” to someone would be caution and patience on this one. But many people aren’t here for financial advice, and don’t really care or take that into account with each and every decision. And that’s fine! We should try not to judge. This one could be driven as much by “YOLO” as “FOMO”.
I was waiting for someone to start this type of comparison. Prices are what the prices are, but to say that this is a hard card to get is a lie. The fact that it’s hard to get a psa 10 for this card means there will be more 9s than usual.
However, because the 10s are harder to get a lot more people will buy 9s, so there probably more demand for them. In all it’s an interesting development. One where supply and demand are both higher than normal for a psa 9. It’s interesting to me to see where it ends up.
@smpratte, I don’t think it’s always salt. I don’t have any personal feelings about the card or current price. However, it’s a card that doesn’t have historical significance, unique art or rarity (these are objective measures of value). Many of us, including yourself, are able to recognize this card poses an opportunity for sellers (not buyers) at the current price.
I’m extremely happy with my ungraded excellent to near mint one without any print lines I noticed i grabbed for around $20 a few months ago thank you very much haha
@papafrankgod That’s fine by me I collect for my own enjoyment. I couldn’t ever properly flip anything I truly value because to me it’s always worth way more than going rate. That goes for pretty much every card in my collection. The true value is in the eye of the beholder not to those that speculate. My $20 card is worth 11k plus to me. Anyone want to buy still? Haha
