As there is no thread for introductions let me introduce myself quick. My name is Nico, 32y old (or young XD) and i live in Belgium (europe)
20y ago i started collecting and unfortunally after 10 years i sold my collection, now i’ve been playing the TCG for 3 a 4 years and i’m going to start collecting again…
now i know that roaring skies was a high demanded set for players, i dont know for collecting but since the reprint i have a chance to buy some boxes again, only would it be a good investment? i know the prices spikes because of the shaymin EX card(s) … but in Japan they are reprinting the best of XY cards were shaymin EX will be in… is it worth as investment to buy some?
Also buying evolutions boxes… good investment because of the zard? I also assume that is why the Flashfire boxes are all expensive (massive zard cards?)
All sets will eventually rise in price. However right now Roaring Skies really only gets its value from the playable cards within (VS Seeker, Shaymin, Rayquaza, Trainer’s Mail, etc) so if you’re looking for a quick (3-4 year) turnaround then you won’t get it. The price will drop off a cliff after it rotates from standard and we lose Shaymin and Mega Ray. Shaymin won’t be reprinted in English (that was pretty much confirmed with the RS reprint itself) so all its reprints in Japan really mean nothing.
If you’re looking for an XY-era long-term investment set, Flashfire is probably the way to go. Evolutions is everywhere and Pokemon will keep printing it for about another 1.5 years, so don’t jump on that bandwagon right now.
Indeed i viewed the video of the new product saturation etc, but overtime i thought it will fetch some good prices…
5 mins ago i was surfing on ebay and i was quite schocked about the PSA 10 rainbow and secret rare prices, so low :-o
The thing is, everyone is storing away RS boxes because they’re so valuable. The rerelease lowered that value as well. Once Shaymin rotates out, Roaring Skies boxes will make nice decorations and that’s about it. The other playable cards that could be reprinted can be found in other sets or aren’t worth enough to bother.
When it comes to Evolutions, it is no secret that it is everywhere. However, it is still an awesome set so instead, you can focus on some of the rare variances which are more valuable. For example, Staff cards, prerelease cards, holo/non holos that are available in those prerelease boxes, 1, 2, 3, 4th place Mew and the International and Oceania Stamp Energies. I personally love the set and don’t just focus on the value so I completed it but if you only care about the collectability then those that I mentioned are a bit rarer than the other ones.
Like the others have said, in September those cards will rotate out and tank in price.
It is best to invest in the zard card itself than a EVO box, PSA 10 versions of it have already hit $400. With the price of the box you can pick up 10 Charizards. Hoard those and it will hold way more value than the box, and if one is Gem Mint you’ve hit the lottery.
although that is no easy feat either, out of the 60 I own only one has been Gem Mint.
The collectable aspect is really important. This is a cheap substitute of base set for many people and while the singles are really cheap the cards are. I still see people completing and buying complete sets of Evolutions 6 months after it came out.
Maybe this demand will die soon, maybe it won’t. It’s definitely an anomaly though.
I wouldn’t suggest buying boxes of evolutions but all this is definitely something to keep in mind as time goes on.
Not worth the investment, the value will tank once rotation happens in August. Although like every other box, the price will probably go up in 4-5years time but not abnormally. Flashfire is the safest bet from XY I personally made a little gamble on Ancient origins too. I also have a few evolutions boxes as i believe they will rise like a normal out of print box will in the future however not by much.
