RIP Metazoo? (Sept 2024 update)

Nicks Strength & Pokémon said he’d continue to collect it. He pretty much saw this coming for over a year but said he still liked the cards. Others have shared a similar sentiment.

Waiting for the inevitable Rudy video

I have never cared much for Metazoo, specifically because it was hyped here as “get rich by iNvEsTiNg” in the “next big thing”. Left a bad taste in my mouth and I can’t say I’m sorry to see them go

Just an observation during the GalaTCG event 2 weeks ago, there was a gentleman who had 2 booster boxes of MetaZoo. I am not sure which set or expansion it was, but he was really trying the very hardest to sell them off. I think he went to almost all of the booths to look for an offer for those boxes. He really looked and sounded desperate to get rid of them. This was just after the artist quitting news and I don’t think many of the booth owners were aware of it, so he did probably get a deal.

Cheers!

Rudy said he found out like everyone else did. He said he has approximately 200 of each booster box. And is in the dark just like everyone else trying to figure out what happened.

While none of us were behind the scenes; let’s be honest, it was mismanagement and an arrogant owner that led to the fall of this TCG.

Not that shocking really. It’s sad that they couldn’t just create a normal and organic TCG. Lots of cool ideas at times, but way too much of it was driven by hype and hot air. You need more than that to make a great collectible and especially one that is actually enjoyed and played by people too.

Without a broader and more casual fanbase, it’s very hard to survive as a niche thing in almost any type of hobby or industry. Pokemon, MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh are all unique/different from one another, but Metazoo just put a bad taste in my mouth when I saw so much investor/crypto/NFT type noise & hype that I knew it just wasn’t going to end well.

MetaZoo can continue on as an IP at some point in the future under new ownership, and I look forward to that day.

So apparently Gary was supposed to go on Pawn Stars with Metazoo products & Mike would be the appraiser. Have to wonder what changed.

100% this. The original MtG cards kinda have a similar vibe to them- by today’s standards the layout, backgrounds, the way to font looks on the cards, etc all seem very dated and like they did not have much care and thought put into them. Which was fine 30 years ago. MZ cards look several steps behind those original MtG cards in my opinion. For a game that came out in 2020.

Four Kickstarter boxes appeared on eBay after the news broke. :upside_down_face:

I would buy a box at that price for the meme alone.

That’s a lot of money for a protective case. What’s that thing inside of it?

TCGs from AAA franchises can’t stay afloat and fail regularly, of course some hot garbage from kickstarter was going to fail. Absolute mess of a card design and horrible artwork that looks like it was lifted straight off a 14 year olds deviant art page.

Pretty much anyone pushing this had either a financial interest or was using it as content to try and build their brand/viewership. I’ve never seen anyone actually play the game or talk about gameplay, total speculative bubble circlejerk with a bunch of suckers jumping on the train and getting hosed.

So what happens to all the shops that have this stocked? Just left holding bags of dead stock that few will want once prices bottom out?
