Is this something that can be done, with the expectation that eBay would actually do something about it before the auction ends? Here’s the listing in question:
Of course I can’t be sure about the legitimacy of the card without seeing it in person, but based on the photos it seems pretty clear to me that it’s fake. I’d like to see some other opinions before reporting it, which is one of the reasons that I’ve decided to post it here. I’d hate to ruin somebody’s sale if it’s legitimate but considering the photos, I actually feel bad for the people who have already placed bids.
To be clear I’m talking about listings that make no mention of the card being fake. If the card is clearly advertised as being fake, I don’t see any issue if someone still wants to buy it. The listing above is advertised as a legitimate card.
Counterfeit items can’t be sold on eBay, you can report the item by going to Report > Copyright and Trademark > Counterfeit Item or Authenticity Disclaimer > Counterfeit, Fake, or Replica item.
Selling fake items is not allowed even if you say they’re fake, but find me a listing that eBay removes because of this and I’ll eat a three-course-meal of my hat.
That’s really unfortunate if they knowingly let people get duped out of potentially hundreds of dollars. The highest bid for this particular card at the moment is already over $165.
I went ahead and reported after reading their policy on this just now. This just seems too obvious to me for not to; the surface doesn’t even have the texture of the real card. After submitting, eBay displayed a message saying they may not remove the listing after review. Instead, they might ask the seller to modify the listing. Hopefully that’s not why the seller added “you will receive the card in the photo” in an edit made after the listing was submitted, as a result of someone previously reporting it.
