I honestly cannot think of any single card I regret buying. I’ve “overpaid” for many cards relative to their market prices, I’ve been suckered on some scams, and I’ve taken arguably dumb risks, but nobody is perfect. If I could go back I don’t think I’d change anything.
I am le canadien
I would say that I have more regrets about cards that I didn’t buy (e.g., I thought that the price was too high or that another copy would come along soon).
100% this! Plenty of cards where I “overpaid”, but none I regret. All the regret is on the other side of woulda coulda shoulda purchases I missed.
I find that I regret sales much more than I do purchases.
I did buy a PSA 7 1st Ed Base Zard during the hype. I paid a lot more than what they are going for today.
My parents made the same “mistake” by buying a PSA 8 1st Ed Base Zard around the same time.
I honestly didn’t expect much of a retrace to occur on these cards, because historically we just never saw it happen.
The joy I get from owning a personal grail card eclipses any regret I may have. Especially since I believe that in the (very) long term even the inflated price I paid will be seen as a bargain.
Also, my parents and I will never sell either of these cards for a loss, regardless of how far they drop, unless it is part of the process of upgrading to a higher grade.
Wait a minute. Your parents collect Pokemon cards?
Nice! My dad collected with me as a kid. He was more into sports but one of the reasons I got into it and why my holos stayed in good condition ![]()
Not a big deal but guess my “regret” purchase would be buying an Absol promo instead of a Typhlosion because I didn’t read the translation properly. Oops.
Yeah haha. I was living with them during the pandemic boom and I guess I got them really into it when there wasn’t much else to do.
They are very aware of all the big names in the hobby. We watched Pokemon YT vids together almost every day. They really enjoy Scott’s and Rudy’s videos.
The Zard was their biggest purchase, but they also have a 1st Ed Fossil Box. Oh and hoards of Modern sealed product. ![]()
Wow, this is so unique! I haven’t heard of many families that collect together. So heartwarming. ![]()
I regret not SELLING EVERYTHING during the boom. haha
Yes, but in a much less uniform, dramatic way than Pokemon did. The MTG that spiked was primarily RL + ABU/ARN/ATQ/LEG stuff, which comprise only a tiny portion of the MTG market.
And the cards that spiked didn’t spike nearly as hard. High-demand, pre-2007 English Pokemon cards generally went up by 4x to 8x. Whereas the MTG spikes were mostly between 1.5x and 3x.
My mom also got into PkMn during the first part of the pandemic. She’s evaluating even more now since her stocks are doing so much worse than the cards. Mostly she has legacy sealed and some 1st ed WotC, and is no hurry to sell, so we’ll see how she goes over the next several years.
Cool mom ![]()
only things I’ve truly regretted buying are ETBs and most english booster boxes
That is so cool! My own parents aren’t even subscribed to my channel! ![]()
I share much of the same sentiments, nothing I have bought that I regret, every purchase was purposeful. My major regret is not getting back into collecting cards when I picked up HGSS for DS back in 2011 when I was in gr 12. Could’ve paid off my student loan by now ![]()
E4 is definitely a bubble, so if this was asked elsewhere the answers would probably be much different!
I regret using cgc for like 500 cards that woulda done better in every way at psa, but as far as like card regrets idk maybe when i bought 7 of those BS yahoo japan listings with the top cards being nice ones and no other pictures, a description something like “found this cleaning out my parents home” and when it arrives its nothing but those top cards (damaged af) and a ton of garbage bulk. I woulda learned the same lesson buying 1 or 2 so i sorta regret the extra 5 that I bought.
Lost maybe 15k on some Wozzie boxes in the last 2 years. Dont feel like touching sealed again. Risky because people lose faith in authenticity as a whole easily.
@eeveeteam yeah these umbreon have gone up to like 16.5k yen on JP Mercari. Can’t find any lower than that. So as needszeebs said it’s rounded up nicely
English is still meh as far as I know, but no biggie. Still a sick card either way.
For me, I avoided major purchases for the most part. As I’ve seen several others say, most people on here probably didn’t buy into the hype too much. Took advantage of selling or hoarding before the massive increases. I switched to entirely Japanese before the boom and that generally appreciated or held constant in most cases.
The only cards I regret buying are ones that I impulse buy because they are ‘deals’, but in reality they are just distractions from main collecting goals.
For example, I bought like 30 of those PSA 10 illustration charizards that were on PWCC the other month, because they were at a price where I can flip them for £10 profit per card or something over here in the UK. Cool in theory, but now I have £1k~ in this charizard card that I don’t massively care about, just staring at me constantly from across the room. I could have used that money to go a bit higher on some pop 1 houndoom auctions on PWCC last week, but instead I have the leaning tower of charizard on my desk doing nothing. It’s taught me a decent lesson in focusing on goals though so thats a good silver lining.
