Referring to Pokemon as "it" or "he/she"? Opinions wanted!

I use the Jordan Peterson approach, and if I determine the pokemon looks to be female in appearance, it’s a she. If it is more of a masculine looking pokemon, it earns the title of him.

But the Pokemon literally have a sex. This is more of a question as to whether Pokemon qualify more as humans with he/she, or if they should qualify more as animals do as “it” regardless of their sex.

Because technically, if writing “properly”, every animal should be assigned as an “it”. He and she are reserved for humans.
