QotD: What is the most mind blowingly absurd thing you've witnessed in the hobby that you almost cant believe really happened?

Snap Magikarp & Pikachu showing up for the first time! For decades collectors thought we might never see those.

I’ve also seen some gorgeous errors over the years and continue to be surprised by the cards that surface.

What’s this story???

It’s sad really. A gentleman (he suffers from autism and is mentally challenged) had two guys that took his money and cards. The shop owners messaged the individuals involved and they bragged about it. Showing no remorse for their actions and refused to make things right. How someone can take advantage of someone like that is just evil imo. I was absolutely shocked to hear what these two did. That doesn’t represent our community/hobby at all. It’s welcoming and friendly for all. Like E4, conventions, meetups, worlds, LGS, etc it’s a place we all feel welcomed and can express our love for pokemon together. Unfortunately some people like those two used it as a way to manipulate and take advantage of those most vulnerable. Most mind blowing thing in this hobby I’ve heard so far. I may have been a lil harsh but those two have no place in our hobby.

Videos of grown-ass “men” fighting over new releases in stores. Then instantly listing for 5x MRSP on eBay, with photos of the items literally on their car passenger seat. They can’t even drive home before trying to rip off others.

I genuinely hope those people burn in hell and their entire bloodline is cursed with poverty, sickness, and disease until they finally succumb to the horrors of their ancestors past, wandering aimlessly as misfortune after misfortunate occurs to their worldly possesions

Scratched the message I was going to send, too soft for those kind of people.

It’s best to not give them attention. Pray for them and that they change their ways. Not a great way to live and treat others. We can’t control others, we can only do our part to make the world a better place for everyone.

For anyone who wants to see the only known snap magikarp in 4k I did a video awhile back! :fish:

I will post this again in the category of mind blowing and the people who actually grade cards should be able to guage how truly amazing the feat is which is just borderline absurd for someone who does not grade cards.

@rabby250 completing the full S-P promo set in PSA 10 with all cards being self submitted to get the 10 grade. Really special to see for me as someone who also collects promos.

Cheers!

I was extremely hyped when “we” (or rather a select few very knowledgable and engaged e4 members) found out that the 1st edition Pikachu Jungle “error” was likely not an error at all, but the very first (and only) true secret rare set card.

I think this one is still alleged.

Learning about this previously unseen trophy card was also super cool to me! Wild to think there are more like it we may never see!

That this kind of money is present in pokemon cards

Same. I actually added it as an official release instead of an error/unofficial release in my Pikachu checklist.

Trust me, it’s still absurd to me as well. There isn’t a week going by where I don’t think how lucky I am to be able to live in this house, financed by little less than 0.02% of my TCG collection (3 out of 15540 non-duplicated cards). :joy: Plus all my savings money and a good-paying mortgage tbf.
Although I guess I haven’t exactly witnessed it, but instead experienced it.

Likewise, I never would have thought I would complete the English portion of my Pikachu TCG collection, yet here we are.

But enough about me..

I think the very first one mentioned is still the most absurd one to me: a scam involving millions of USD of fake prototype cards, including autographed copies from the creator of this very Pokémon TCG we all love. Still a huge shoutout to pfm for uncovering all this.

Another more general thing that also surprised me (and still does anytime it happens): how many cards from decades ago have been (re)discovered in the last few years. The trophy card @qwachansey mentioned is just one of them, but the two Glossy Keiji Kinebuchi ivy Pikachu promos come to mind; the Mini Decks from 2018; the Cresselia/Darkrai DPt promos; the unreleased BW-P RH promos; the unreleased Crosshatch League promos; the few real 1995 prototype cards; the unlimited edition L1 gen 2 starters; etc. etc.

Greetz,
Quuador

Really appreciate that the set is recognized by fellow promo collectors!

Unfortunately I’m not planning to further expand this into SV-P as the goal is no longer feasible even for someone living in Japan, plus I’m experiencing some changes in the past few months which made me prioritize my collections in other categories (e-reader, Nintendo games and Asian promos) over Japanese TCG. But such recognitions made my journey through S-P valuable which I’ll be sure to cherish for a very long time.

Considering who was involved, how long the cards were around before being outed (not that long but long enough for CGC to validate them and the market to respond), and how they were discovered to be fake, it’s got to be this. It’s got to be one of the most absurd things to happen in any collecting hobby ever.

Losers listing their 25th anniversary Charizard/Blastoise for the base set’s value.
