The Question of the Day is a way to facilitate community discussion to help members ponder the unanswered questions of the world that are somehow relating to the hobby. Questions are many times open ended and up to interpretation. Feel free to post your thoughts in as much or as little detail as you’d like.
Helpful Considerations may or may not help some people focus their answer, these are blurred to not bother those who have their own ideas.
A friend of mine recently went to a garage sale, and when say recently i mean it happened in 2024.
He was looking around to find some pokémon stuff but we live in a not very populated area on the countryside.
He stumbled upon an old guy with an old metal pokebox from the Ex era and believe it or not but inside was a Gold star Rayquaza (in more than ok condition) and some other stamped cards.
I know it’s not very cool but he played it as if he didn’t know the value and got the whole box for 10 bucks, rayquaza included, and i’m SO JEALOUS.
I came to E4 because I did a deal w/Charlie for maybe 100 bucks to sell him the remaining 1999-2000 Fossil Rares he needed for his collection. That was a lot of money to both of us at the time.
When @ReganRampage completed his prerelease collection and started working on his prerelease staff collection. I don’t think people know how absolutely absurd this is, much less how much little time this actually took. Absolutely floored
Pre-covid pretty much every trophy card in ”lower” grade (PSA 7 and under) was less than $1000. I’m the stupid who didn’t buy anything back then, because the prices will go down, I said to myself.
Now if I try to get any trophy card in that grade range I’m going to lose arm and leg + ton of money.
As someone who has been collecting for a long time and was a closet collector because of the social stigma, the most mind blowing thing is that is still how popular and socially acceptable collecting is today for adults.
Every week in the hahbee feels like someone is trying to combine a dumbed down version of Franklin The Turtle with Al Qaeda, South Park and The Sopranos.
If you strip away the revolving door of conflict and inflation, I can’t say I’ve experienced much that I’d describe as mind blowingly absurd. The 765 ISBN Base box, that was certainly a golden Ho-Oh moment.
What even happened with this? Did he get arrested? Or forced to return the cards? I know the prices of these cards are lower than normal due to this so I’m guessing they weren’t returned. How does this even happen? So many questions.
Makes you think what other scandals of similar cards are out there, perhaps perpetrated by people smart enough to not announce their own crimes on video.
At this point they were absorbed by the market. Still wish i had gotten a set of all 3 in psa9 for $100 when thats what they were going for.
As far as other theft scandals, of course the fusion strike scandal of thousands of Secret rares being sold to a cardshop with evolving skies also having a few dozen of each moonbreon and rayquaza vmax being reported having a similar thing happen.
There was the “inadvertently released” charizard scandal where it was stolen about a month or two before release and graded by cgc.
Also modern sheets getting stolen from factories and from 3rd party “secure” waste disposal companies.
Absolutely not. This person has parlayed the monetary success of the stolen gold star dogs into a large collectibles business. They now operate under the ‘cardhouse.eu’ username.
I don’t believe they themselves stole the cards, but they clearly knew something was questionable about them when they were purchased.
Personally, I agree with @dragonwarrior, the craziest thing that has happened in my opinion is the massive increase in social acceptability of collecting. We’ve gone from being laughed at for collecting cards to Logan Paul walking out at Wrestlemania with a Pikachu Illustrator chain.
Pokemon cards being more popular than ever for multiple years now is pretty surprising as this wasnt the case for nearly 20 years. The fact theres multiple pokemon cards over six figures is pretty astounding as well. Again, wasnt a thing for 20+ years.
Im pretty used to it by now but in retrospect its crazy
When two scumbags ripped off a mentally disabled man for all his rare cards and money. I pray those guys that did it never find happiness and them and their families suffer hardship for generations to come.
