Besides ditto I think there are good choices every gen. Articuno, umbreon, deoxys, garchomp, chandelure, xerneas, solgaleo, dragapult, ogerpon all come to mind also
I agree. It’s a unique cool pokemon without being over designed or too edgy; it explores a good concept (ancient predator/fossil) without being gimmicky and fits nicely as kabuto evolution.
It feels somewhat believable as a natural inhabitant of the Poke world.
Just an example of course, plenty of other gen1-3 Pokemon check all these boxes
Johto Times is currently holding a poll asking several Pokémon fans what their favourite is, so that could give an impression which designs are considered the best.
I think Darkrai is a perfectly executed Dark type who looks every bit the part of a nightmare factory. This particular artwork is probably my favorite. And since they were created by the designer who also created Rayquaza, Celebi and Deoxys…well, c’mon…
