QotD: In percentage form, how much have you spent for your collection versus estimated current value?

Nice try IRS

(Im not even American)

Its a site error feature that seems to auto translate with specific trigger words or spellings. I wrote the typical american english poorly and it autotranslated it to proper grammar while assuming it was originally italian(?).

I know no italian nor does the country want me to butcher their language with attempts at writing it.

I have no clue. It would be awfully difficult to check the market value for every card because prices changes so frequently these days.

If I had to guess:

  • Normal Set Cards: 20%-30% (some set cards have 3x-5x)
  • Chase Set Cards: 10%-20% (some chase cards have 5x-10x)
  • PSA 10s: 3% - 30% (some desirable PSA 10s have 3x-30x)
  • Trophies: 20%-30% (some of my trophy cards have 3x-5x)
  • Signed Cards: 20%-50% (some desirable signed cards have 2x-5x)

I haven’t been as diligent as others have been in tracking over the years. I’ve done spreadsheets but always grow lazy and stop updating eventually.

… If I had to guess, between 7.5-15% cost basis to total current collection value.

I am still actively buying, but the earlier purchases do the heavy lifting of course. That number is only getting higher now.

You’ll find the longer a collector has been around, and the more front-loaded their purchases, the lower that percentage will be (generally).

No idea for sure, since prices vary a lot and I have over 25k+ items in my collection, but likely 10-15%, I guess.

Some things I’ve bought, especially the ones I purchased early on 10-11 years ago, have increased 10-20x in value compared to purchase price; other things, especially non-TCG Seviper stuff tbf, I’ve already bought overpriced, so are likely realistically worth half or 1/3rd of what I’ve paid.
All combined however, in the eleven years I’ve been collecting, almost everything has increased. So despite having spend A LOT in those eleven years on my collection in total, it’s likely worth 8-10x as much as what I’ve paid for everything. Sometimes it’s a scary thought how much everything is worth in total tbch..

Sounds like jealousy from someone who hasnt answered the question :winking_face_with_tongue:

Rule 1 of fightclub is: Never tell randos on the internet your $ or any indication of value

I overpaid for all my cards by 69,69% and they are worth -$1 in total.

It’s fine to not want to answer the question but why try to make fun of those who did?

Thats fair but also why it asks for only percent instead of any value. Nobody needs to know value, just an interesting question for some.

Cost is negligible, value is infinite. Theres several copies of my collection out there but none of them were the first :fire::united_states::united_kingdom::belgium::australia:

To any albanian mobsters in white sprinters currently scouting targets in eastern Norway; my collection is worth 198 krone and there are vipers of death in my basement.

This is my pokeman protection

Because this is a forum with grown adults (mostly dudes) discussing pokeman - you did that yourself.

(Im aware that includes me)

Also it’s a slow day in the office

I just sold of bunch of my higher end graded cards and my average was 21%. All of them were purchased between late 2022 - mid 2024. If I accounted for everything it would probably be a little lower but those cards were the vast majority of my collections value.
