How do you keep track of the value of your collection?

Hey Guys

We have talked about how to keep track of your collection in general. But how do you keep track of the value?

I have tried various methods of keeping track of my collection. But nothing really clicked with me.
Collectr is missing a lot of Japanese cards.
Manually updating the value via an Excel sheet also becomes quite a task the more the collection grows.

Has anyone tried tcgtrends or tcgcollector and can provide some feedback?

What do you use?
The greatest value I would see in something that automatically updates the value of the card, similar to Collectr.

I also use Collectr. But it’s whatever. I don’t really check the value. I’m always just after what I want to but next. Card, figure, plush etc. it’s the thrill of the chase and seeing what will look nice with everything else for me

I don’t.

I just remember the 5 cards I own that are worth more than $30 and then call the rest of my collection 10 cent bulk.

Not only I don’t want to know how much my collection is costing me, but it’s also difficult to track everyday-price for each card.
I think your question has no answer unless you have a software that can do it automatically.
And if that’s the case, I don’t want to know that such a program exists, Thank you

you might want to try https://www.pokedata.io/portfolio. i think they have a decent amount of japanese cards on there.

the prices are not as accurate as tcgfish but it gives a fairly rough estimate of your collection at least.

I use excel when I make purchases so that I know how much I am spending. As for the current value of my collection I have no idea. I will look up the current value of certain items when I am getting ready to sell them to see if it is around the price that I am will to sell at, otherwise my collection is worth whatever I think it is worth.

PSA set registry app shows PSA value prices and auction prices that updates regularly.

Value only matters to me when I’m looking to sell. I keep an eye on stuff that I might want to sell/buy more regularly, but otherwise, IDCare. I know what things were worth when I bought them, and when I bought them, and then I just let it ride, updating when I sell so I know the tax numbers and how I’m doing on ROI and speculation. (either to pat myself on the back or drink my tears.)

I dont really, but i feel like the easiest way to get an idea would be to stick everything in the pwcc vault and just assume the number is somewhere around the insured value. Obviously this wont work for everything and the number will probably be off, but if u dont want to track it yourself, this is probably the best lazy way

Once you start getting into the 5 figures, its just too much to bother and doesn’t really matter at that point.

that’s such an arbitrary figure… why would it not matter?

i think its pretty interesting to see what your collection is worth at a glance, and its also nice to know how well you have done over time.

i like pokedata too because it lets me know when cards i own spike in price, since i’m not keeping tabs on every card i own manually

i’ve gotten in the habit of just adding the card to my pokedata portfolio everytime i add a new slab to my collection. its not much upkeep and its pretty insightful.

I just ballpark my graded cards every few months. As long as what I sell from my submission covers what ive bought and graded, I’m in the green

If I’m not ever selling, why would it matter?

Well its never a bad thing to have a healthy guage on you collection value… to have visibility and maintain a good financial balance, appreciate what it took to get there, proper storage, and maybe even trading credit - especially with the new trade rule here on the forum!

Jeez, you dropped this :crown:

Financial balance is only relevant for how much money im putting in each month, not for the value of my collection thats not leaving my hands anyways. And I do proper storage whether its a 1 dollar card or 1000 dollar cards. And you can track or easily look up single cards for trading or selling but the thread asked about TOTAL value which you simply never need to know unless you plan on actually selling your collection.

Simply because it’s interesting.
If it’s about the hobby you like, then interest and fun is all it needs for it to matter.

Well…
No, financial balance can also be the summation of each month you collect… aka your total collection and not only each month. If you only assess your finances month by month and not annually/bi-annualy as well youre likely gonna miss things. What if you want to trade your entire collection for a card?

Im not holding a gun to your head, just highlighting why it makes sense to not be completely blind to the value of your (decades old) collection outside of selling
