Video games up to gen 2 but I wanna take a crack at later generations. I’ve never played the full card game but have been a Pokemon pocket player since release.

Started with R/S on release, then moved into G/S/C + R/B + Stadium. Played Diamond on release, and Platinum soon after. Played B/W – didn’t love it so skipped until X/Y and played those. Circled back to trying Gen 5 again and ended up loving the games. Hated everything since until S/V.

BW2 > Platinum > HGSS > Emerald > Crystal > BW > everything else preceding > Gen 7-8 (lmao)

Also played Dash, Snap, Mystery Dungeon, Trozei, Ranger (both entries/titles), Rumble, Unite, Pinball, Pokken, Battle Revolution, FRLG.
I think the only games I haven’t played are Colosseum and XD? Then the newer entries of Mystery Dungeon etc.

(Oh, also played the card game too. I prefer the older formats).

I’ve played the majority of the mainline games in some format (eg. tried all gens but some as remakes). In an odd order too:

Moon
Crystal
Let’s Go Pikachu
Platinum
Alpha Sapphire
White
SwSh + DLC
New Pokémon Snap
Brilliant Diamond
Legends Arceus
SV + DLC
Legends ZA

My wife and I played the card game for fun but she wasn’t into it and I didn’t love it. Dabbled with the Pocket game too but again, I could take or leave the card game aspect.

No & no.

Where I grew up, the cards were only in English so I barely understood what it said. It’s not exactly an easy language either the way they are written. Like, imagine being 7 and reading “Petal Whirlwind”.

The way we “played” was simply who had higher HP, more badass-looking card or a Charizard, won.

I touch on it in my post, but I’d really recommend giving BW2 and Emerald a try. They’re both very strong narrative games (as far as Pokemon goes) and decent battles. Gen 5 creature design might not be your cup of tea, in which case Emerald should serve you well (although I think as a game BW2 is stronger).

If you wanted to revisit Gen 2 HGSS is a really good remake of them also and imo a better player experience.

Ok thanks for the recommendations!! Yeah I played hgss as well but I lumped then in with gen 2 haha. I did enjoy the newer mechanics a lot! Also the newer gen Pokemon are growing on me from playing pocket haha.

I’ve played every main series game. Played in the toys r us leagues as a kid, played competitively in the DP, HGSS, and BW eras, had a very brief stint in SwSh competitive, and now have other priorities lok

I’ve put my 10,000+ hours into the good video games (gen 1-6) and I don’t give a shit about the card game.

I’ve been playing the card game since I started collecting! Quite a while ago now thinking about it..

With all the craze around the collector side of the hobby, the competitive side has never been easier to start with the top decks costing under £25/$30 for the most part. There is also a ton of information on what decks to build out there (mostly limitlesstcg), and the online client is incredibly new player friendly, especially if you wanted to stick to “free to play”.

It’s been one of the parts of the hobby that has remained “normal” to me, and the influx of new players with genuine interest for the cards really helps build good communities for the most part. I keep focusing on it whenever the collector side starts seriously overwhelming me, which has happened multiple times over the years now.

And I’ve played most of the video games but haven’t enjoyed the more recent entries for whatever reason (other than pokopia).

You are so brave

I’ve played all gen 1-3 games and a handful of later gen games. Never played the card game. It’s one of those things I keep telling myself I’ll learn someday then never get around to it.

The games have been my main way of interacting with the franchise since I was a kid. I’ve played all the mainline games and a fair few of the spin-offs (Pokémon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire my beloved). I even have a complete living Pokédex on Pokémon HOME with each generation of Pokémon having a different Origin Mark - was a lot of fun to accomplish, and a precursor to my goal of putting a TCG Pokédex together.

I played the TCG with friends when I was younger, mostly using pre-constructed decks with some cool pulls from boosters slotted in (strategic synergy need not apply), but have started playing on Live and locally in the last few months with more meta-aligned decks and have been enjoying it! It really complements the collecting aspect for me, and it’s nice to meet other people in my area with interest in the TCG.

Ive played both, haven’t played the video games in a LONG time. I do play Pokemon TCG Live here and there. Dont have an physical decks or anything built for play. Mostly lack the time for in person play, though, not the want.
