QotD: Have you ever played the video or card game(s)?

I have started playing the video games as a kid with Pokémon Blue and until Gen 5 I played every mainline game (and finished it) at least once (apart from Black 2 because that’s the only game from Gens 1 to 5 I am still missing). After that I only finished Let’s Go Pikachu and Legends Arceus. Otherwise I played at least one game per Generation from Gens 6 to 9 but haven’t finished a single one because I really did not like them as much.

I still play the older games a lot. I usually rotate through the Gens 1 to 5, but I am at least doing one Hoenn run per year (usually Emerald). I am currently trying to complete my HeartGold file (which for me is a Living Dex, getting all Gold symbols in the Frontier and getting all Stars in the Trainer Pass). I have a completed Emerald file apart from the last Trainer Pass star (the Contests). After finishing this project on HG I will probably do the same on my White 2 copy.

I am playing Gen 3 OU on Showdown from time to time because it’s my favorite Gen and was also the Gen were I started playing competetively as a juvenile (the good old Net Battle days).

My first Pokemon game was Yellow, and I own every main series game leading up to the Switch excluding Ultra Moon. (But I will say my only copy of Black is in Japanese)

I only recently got into playing the TCG in the past year, but it has been a lot of fun to explore that side of Pokemon.

yes and yes  i wouldn’t have actually played the latter without the former tbh. it was the Pokemon TCG gameboy game that got me interested in how the cards actually work instead of how pretty they were

That’s also what go me into learning how to play the TCG! Of course, I only know how to play the old wotc formats as a result!

I’d also recommend checking out the sequel, which adds the Team Rocket expansion and some other promos. The game only released in Japan but there are translation patches available for your legally acquired rom.

Played the video games, don’t collect them.

Didn’t play the TCG, but try to collect all of them.

Go figure

Yep! I have and own all of the video games, their boxes and contents. I’ve also played the TCG for a little bit with my wife. It’s fun!

TCG from base set until early ex era. Briefly again during sword/shield era.

I’ve played the big 3 tcgs to some extent. Magic was fun until mirrodin ruined it. Pokemon is still fun, 3 prize cards suck though. tbh I don’t even like 2 prize cards unless its limited to like 1 per deck maybe.

competitive pokemon video game has had its ups and downs. I prefer 6v6 singles, but TPC hates it which is pretty rude.

I have played the first 2 gen video games. Played the TCG back in the days of Haymaker and Chansey decks through gen 2. Then picked up the TCG around 2019 doing a Pokemon League with a local after school program until it shut down in 2022. Also played online during that time

I can hear this image.

I’ve played the games through gen 4 including remakes, but I’ve never played the card game. Not by the actual rules anyways.

Never having been particularly interested in the card game is probably why I have less of an issue with japanese cards. I know the name of the pokemon and don’t care what the card says.

Played from red until diamond and pearl every game, played the card game competitively when i was a wee little boy and went to worlds in 08 and 09 with my little sister. Some of the best memories of my life. Haven’t competed since, did get back into it in 2019? whatever format zorogarb was the best, but that was online only. Might get back into playing again as I’ve caught the pokebug bigger than ever
