Kyogre and Groudon. Super-ancient Pokemon who represent separate elemental spheres. Kyogre having dominion over the hydrosphere and Groudon over the lithosphere. Classical land and sea monsters who wield powerful weather-changing abilities. These titans of nature are always at war. Kyogre and Groudon’s constant conflict with each other is similar to that of the Hebrew myth of Leviathan and Behemoth who would start a battle that would kill them both at the end of time. Pokemon provided fans with two creatures of historied origins and a deep lore.
I am partial to Kyogre. The Sea Basin Pokemon was my choice when picking between Ruby and Sapphire. Kyogre reminds me of Lugia. Both are elegant and powerful Pokemon, mysterious winged beasts who dwell in the oceans. But Kyogre is primordial. Less a part of the ocean and more the essence of it. This is where Kyogre has its edge, in time.
Ah, the section I’ve been waiting for. As with the Latis, I really enjoy how many of the cards for this duo were designed as direct pairings. Great presentation, as always!
Might be a hot take, but I feel these guys are genuinely the pinnacle of legendary Pokemon. Rayquaza is included in that, but I’m guessing he is in the next week’s post. Might just be my bias speaking, though. Excellent post yet again, thanks!
Good eye, seems my posting pattern has been found out. I agree with you. Kyogre, Groudon and Rayquaza reached the summit. They are the best.
I collected Latios and Latias around the same time as Kyogre and Groudon. You’re right, there has definitely been a significant amount of symmetry and pairing between them over the years. Made for a fun card sorting and organizing experience. Got to color match, couple similar artwork, and coordinate which direction the Pokemon face. I felt I could weave together some eye-catching collages.
Rayquaza completes the super-ancient Pokémon trio as protector of the skies, having dominion over the atmosphere.
What more can be said of Rayquaza? A beautiful emerald dragon with unimaginable power. A protector serpent with the ability of flight. In a “Pokémon of the Year” poll held by The Pokémon Company in 2020, Rayquaza was voted the most popular Generation III Pokémon, receiving 60,939 votes. It was also the eighth-most popular Pokémon overall. I love Rayquaza. From the sound of his name to his design, Ray is one of my favorite Pokémon. Reminds me of Shenron from Dragon Ball.
Deoxys is the DNA Pokémon. It is known to take on many forms. Interestingly, in its normal state, Deoxys’ arms form a double helix. A nod to the Pokémon’s DNA inspiration. I really enjoyed Pokémon’s take on a being seemingly alien in origin with mutation-like abilities.
Dude, your collection thread is top tier! I’m always excited to see a new post! Awesome stuff!
Amazing update!!
Gen 3 legendaries are too good
Another fantastic update with two more of my favorite Pokémon. Always a joy to see this thread bumped!
This was obviously all elaborately planned to hit gen 4 right alongside the DP remake release.
An iron plated dinosaur. Heavily armored from head to toe. This spiritual successor to Tyranitar is an absolute tank.
I’d like to highlight the Ex Ruby & Sapphire evolutionary line. Arita’s use of lighting and shadow bring these creatures to life. Aron curiously staring up toward the cavern’s blueish white light. Lairon peering over its shoulder toward the cave’s illuminated entrance with an ominous blue light in the background. And Aggron standing confidently just outside the cave, face lit from the sun’s rays streaming through the canopy above. Arita is a story teller, with every stroke he provides tone and depth to his illustrations.
Mitsuhiro Arita nails it time and time again. He really shows his class here.
I love Aggron. Always a part of my team whenever I play through gen 3. Such a cool evolution line in terms of concept. And Aaron artworks are always really good. I especially like the lighting on that first Aaron/Lairon cards.
I have always loved that Mysterious treasures Aggron! I remember pulling it form a pack as a kid. Amazing collection!!
Gentle, elegant, and beautiful. A fairy with psychic powers who fashions a flowing white gown. Gardevoir dares to impress. So many great TCG illustrations over the years.
Love that art for Ralts from Dragon Frontiers! These different Pokemon updates are so cool!!
Great 3rd gen choices so far! Hope we get a metagross one soon! Definitely that shining Gardevoir is one of my favorite cards! So amazing glad to see it get some recognition here!
That secret wonders holo is banger. All the others are as well of course but I really need to pick up that secret wonders one.
I’ve always been ambivalent on Metagross. It took me some time to warmup to this Pokemon. In fact, it wasn’t until I saw Steven Stone’s Metagross that I began to appreciate the design. Metagross showed me what a psychic and twisted metal powerhouse looks like when it takes flight.
@pulpyfan, what are your thoughts on Beldum?
Metagross is one of my favs! The delta species one i had as a kid! Great cards!
