Kyogre and Groudon. Super-ancient Pokemon who represent separate elemental spheres. Kyogre having dominion over the hydrosphere and Groudon over the lithosphere. Classical land and sea monsters who wield powerful weather-changing abilities. These titans of nature are always at war. Kyogre and Groudon’s constant conflict with each other is similar to that of the Hebrew myth of Leviathan and Behemoth who would start a battle that would kill them both at the end of time. Pokemon provided fans with two creatures of historied origins and a deep lore.

I am partial to Kyogre. The Sea Basin Pokemon was my choice when picking between Ruby and Sapphire. Kyogre reminds me of Lugia. Both are elegant and powerful Pokemon, mysterious winged beasts who dwell in the oceans. But Kyogre is primordial. Less a part of the ocean and more the essence of it. This is where Kyogre has its edge, in time.
