Well, also it just seems that people put too much worry into a cards condition. Cards arent made of steel. They’re made of thin paper. Things happen. I collect because I love the athletes that Im collecting. I love what they have done in their respective sports. I have collecyted that way since the early 80s. Back then we just put the cards in top holders and enjoyed them for what they were. Thin paper cards of our favorite athletes. We didnt go crazy because a card wasnt crisp and sharp and all this other crap. We just enjoyed collecting them. Nowadays everything has become ridiculous. Its got to be a graded card or nothing. It got to be gem mint or 9 or whatever. Grading has created a monster.
If you had 2 copies of the exact same card and one was in better condition than the other, would you pay a premium for the one in better condition?
If you worry about condition of a card too much, it can ruin your hobby. Just collect.
I would buy both. I buy duplicates all the time. I dont care about condition. I have 2 michael jordan czech stadion gold cards. Ones in better condition but I could care less. I love the card.
I buy cards in all conditions because I love the hobby. Im not going to stress out over a card that is a little roughed up. Its made of paper.
I keep my cards in top holders and dont care what they might grade.
I know a guy who was absolutely devastated over a scratch on the card. I mean depressed to the point that he wouldnt talk to his own family for a week. Over a scratch. I told him hey, its ok. I mean he was just absolutely devastated. You would have thought his best friend died. And thats the kind of crap that grading has created.
Thats why I dont get caught up in the condition stuff.
Because it can make the hobby a hard one to enjoy.
I was with you @huckleberry on not understanding people having issues with grades given by a third party on a card that one enjoys in it’s raw state. I don’t think one should ever let the 3rd party opinion lower your enjoyment of a card. e.g. if you enjoy a card enough and think it is mint enough to send it for PSA grading thinking that it is going to get a 10 and then it comes back a 9 IMO I think it is odd to stress too much about it. This is 100% valuing/buying the label over the card.
I deviate from you strongly though in that I definitely understand why people would prefer higher condition cards over lower condition ones. I mean do you want scratches/dents on your car? Holes and frays on your shirts? Scuffs on your shoes? Bruises and nicks in your produce? No, you generally prefer and value ones higher in higher condition.
That said some of my most appreciated and valued cards are those that were battered and bruised by my younger self but that is bringing the nostalgia angle into it all. You should start gathering all your thoughts together and posting at once vs. multiposting several times. It makes things seem more ranty-rambly.
You make good points. I will also try not to post so many times. I understand wanting to have a card in the best condition, but you have to admit, it can take the fun out of it pretty fast.
That can definitely depend, sometimes ones goal can be to collect a full set - no matter the conditions, and after that they may want to upgrade some of the worst condition cards in their binder, so it’s more appealing to the eye ![]()
I would say that it can have both a positive and negative side, and it really depends on how you look at it, and how that feeling comes into play, when you try to collect. If it makes you envious, jealous and other bad feelings, sure, it’d be better if people could be happy with “just” a worse condition card, but if it can bring forth motivation and fun, and a drive in your collecting, such as when you are on the hunt for that one specific card, then I can absolutely only see that as a positive thing. ![]()
Good points, it all depends on the person, and the circumstances.
Have a great day. I have to go look for my white whale, a czech stadion gold redemption carl lewis card. Cant locate that card anywhere. Been trying for months. The search continues…
I mean I thought this was more about the PSA case rather than the card itself but fair enough.
You are right though honestly. I mean PSA 9…PSA 3 Charizard who cares. I’d pay the same amount for a charizard that was literally stomped on with a dirty steel-toe boot and flushed down the toilet, doesn’t matter. Just collect.
I actually have a blastoise that my brother cut in half but it doesn’t matter to me I just put it in a top loader it’s just paper. I love that card. Back in the day blastoise was always the best water pokemon of them all I remember when Gary’s Blastoise vs’d Ash in the show that match was epic (even though blastoise lost but still).
this is getting bizarre

79 posts in one day, wtf. I don’t think he’s got anything to worry about with the SS post count, lol…
@garyis2000 should be worried that he doesn’t have the most posts anymore in the upcoming month at this rate. ![]()
