Pokemon Organized Play (POP) Timeline 2005-2006 (Pokemon League Year 7)

Preface

Summary

Like the previous posts, this will continue as a work in progress. As always, any promotional materials or attendance records from this time period are greatly appreciated.

In these articles I often refer to anything outside of North America as “International,” simply because TPCi was known as Pokemon USA Inc. at this time, and competitive play heavily revolved around the United States’ schedule. I am aware that both Canada and Mexico are indeed international as well!

Pokemon Organized Play (POP) 2005-2006

Officially the third competitive season under TPCi/NoA, Organized Play really started to grow both in the US and Internationally in the 2005-2006 season. This season saw the removal of the Stadium Challenge Series, the addition of the Regional Championships Series, as well as the continuation and growth of the Gym Challenge, City, State(Provincial) and National Championships Series’. Year 7 of the Pokemon League is referred to as the “Battle Frontier Cycle,” with 7 Seasons total all revolving around the Frontier Brains in Pokemon Emerald’s Battle Frontier:

Season 1 “Tactics”
Season 2 “Guts”
Season 3 “Luck”
Season 4 “Knowledge”
Season 5 “Spirit”
Season 6 “Ability”
Season 7 “Brave”

City Championships Series 2005-2006 (North America)

The Battle Frontier cycle began with over 200 City Championship events across the globe from November 2005 to March 2006. Every documented event had been recorded below, and yes, it’s a very long list! xD At each of these events participants received a Whismur card from the EX Emerald expansion sporting a unique City Championship stamp. Below is also a link of City Championship winners that has survived thanks to the WaybackMachine archive.

Winners of all City Championship events received a prize package like the one below, as well as an invitation to their local State/Provincial or Regional Championship in March/April.

State Championships Series 2006 (& Provincial)

The 2006 season brought a soft introduction of the Provincial title to the State Championships Series, which would eventually be known as State/Province/Territory Championships. This year was unique, as TPCi was still figuring out logistics on how to designate these events for the global competitive audience. There were no true International State Championships besides the handful in Mexico, and events in Europe and Asia that would fall around this timeframe were rather labeled as Regional/Provincial Championships or Gym Challenge events in other countries. Competitors at these events in the US, Canada, and Mexico received a Loudred card from EX Emerald with a unique State Championships stamp. Winners of the North American State Championships are linked below!

Regional Championships Series 2006 (International)

Since the State Championships Series was phased out of Europe, Asia and South America, at these Regionals events TPCi printed a new version of the Loudred card from EX Emerald with a unique Regional Championships stamp on it for each participant. While I can’t verify for sure that these were exclusive to International events, they weren’t handed out in the US at Regionals and were intended to replace the Loudred distributed at States. Regionals events took place over a period of several months from March to May of 2006.

Regional Championships Series 2006 (North America)

Unlike the International Regionals, the US already had a Loudred promo card handed out at events in 2006. They had plans to finish the evolution line of Whismur/Loudred/Exploud to coincide with the previous years’ City/State/National promo releases. (Machop/Machoke/Machamp in '05, Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard in '04) Instead of handing out Exploud at these events, each competitor received a Golem card from EX Legend Maker with a Regional Championships stamp on it.

There were only a handful of Regionals events unlike State and City Championships, and a list of winners is linked below thanks to the WaybackMachine archives. All US Regionals events took place in the month of April 2006.

Thank you very much! As time goes on more resources and records survived so these articles will only grow in length :skull: That being said, after painstakingly typing out 500+ event dates and locations I highly doubt I’ll have the patience to do so for very long xD I might have to resort to screenshots pretty soon.

I’ve updated the article to include interviews from each of the TCG World Champions. I was able to find them from the following year’s official 2007 World Championships website while writing that article, which only goes to show these articles will continue to be works in progress as we uncover more hidden gems
