These cards that are highly favoured already mentioned were in their own circle and have become cult-followed classics until something demand-based triggers them to ascend like with the case of consistent and actual popular (to evidently MSM examples) cards such as Southern Islands, Expedition, Shining and Ancient Mew and the starters.
In the case of Typhlosion, it was a mix of every factor imaginable. This demand will likely ripple throughout other relevant era cards. However, on set cards being difficult to grade as the prime and sole factor just isn’t enough. Saying this and looking at 10’s (following grade after) being a minority of what’s survived since release is an indication of those making these cards matter. I wasn’t even mad when it (pun intended) Typhloded because it was a break into a new chapter for what’s universally accepted in MSM as the usual high tier Pokémon cards.
Outside of art/favourite mon/set collection really cares about Yanma even compared to Houndour or the big baller Neo Genesis stars who were popular in several dimensions from the start? Look at the variation of top price for each holofoil in their sets respectfully. WOTC Eeveeloutions, Dragonite, Tyranitar and some of the cult Mews above are scratching at the five-figure gates. Shining Magikarp and the three Neo beasts comes to mind.
Or what if this was on the other side of Pokémon in contemplating modern potential. I don’t see the Rocket Anniversary case promos having a reason to descend, like, at all.
So true. I was as deep as you could get into Pokémon from 1999-2002. Typhlosion was not even in same hemisphere as popular as charizard. Charizard was on the gameboy game cover box. Charizard didn’t obey Ash in the anime and only fought when he felt like it (aka was overpowered).
Lugia was the big guy in Gen 2. Lugia was on the cover of the gameboy game, Lugia had his own movie. Typhlosion was never a big deal, and is only popular now on a T17 because it’s a hard card to grade. Having played probably a thousand hours of Pokémon Red and Silver, watching all the anime, and collecting a ton of cards at that time too…I can assure you T17 is mainly only expensive because of its pop and the fact that the box it comes from is approaching 20k.
