Pikachu Rayquaza Poncho Sealed Box

I’m a small pokemon collector and have found an item thatd be my “holy grail”. But am looking for help on the value, condition & decision making.

I’ve found a Pikachu Rayquaza Poncho box sealed in Japan from a bookoff store. They’re selling it for 690k yen, but I can get a tax refund down to 635k.

(It was sold to them from someone who bought it on release)

Is this a good price? I can’t find anything about them online, so is making it really hard. This is one my favourite items ever, but it is also 3.3k gbp haha, so its alot of money. So am in the deciding stage.

Here’s a link to some photos of it: https://imgur.com/a/kJGhtIe

If anyone could help me with some research that’d be great. As first time buying an item like this. Want to make sure the seals are good, etc.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

It sounds like you could get it for $4,385 USD after the tax refund. The most recent sales that I could find were (in USD):

  • 7/2024 - $2,099
  • 11/2023 - $3,720
  • 10/2022 - $2,250
  • 8/2021 - $1,900

The cheapest eBay listings are well over $6,000 USD.

I would recommend reaching out to a few eBay sellers before biting the bullet and paying such a premium. Or you could patiently wait for another box to list in auction on PWCC/eBay. Personally, I think $4,000+ USD is too high. However, if this is truly your holy grail, then the cash differential might not matter all that much in the end. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the infromation dude! For me its definetly one of the best items in tcg. But its not something id crazy over pay for haha.

See, i had a friend do somw research and they found these ones that had been sold recently.

Its really proving hard to find the “real market price” as ive seen some at 2k like you have found, then some at the 4k usd mark haha.

Dont suppose you have any advice on resealing products? As saw a reddit post of a magikarp one being opened and it had been emptied. Lmak

Now i look on the stockx app, its show theyre going for 2.2k to 2.8k lmao.

I guess it really just depends whos selling it? As i am finding all different sorts of prices :sob:

On the Japan auction website mercari, theyre selling for 700k Yen

With the recent meteoric rise of the Poncho Pikachus, it doesn’t surprise me that these sealed boxes have increased in price by 30%-50% over the past year.

Your point about resealing is not an unfounded concern. Reseals do happen, so it’s important that you buy from someone that you trust.

Is there a reason that you would prefer the sealed box over owning the individual poncho cards? For a little more, you could buy both cards in PSA 10. Or you could buy both in PSA 9 for the price of one box. Seems like a no brainer to me, but I’m not a huge fan of this type of sealed product.

Yeah i see your point, for me i just love to have things sealed haha. As think they make for a better presenting piece?

I might think abkut getting the cards separately, but mainky want a sealed box XD

Thank you for finding that information in the card values also  really interesting to see how much they have changed haha

I enjoy the presentation as well and desire one day to aquire all the opened boxes for display like what TwiceBakeJake has.

Since I have acquired All the Poncho Pikachu Set in a 10, I believe this is what I’ll focus on next since they are a great display piece :jigsaw:

The last ebay sale was 3.95k USD and the last SockX sale was about 3.8k USD

The singles are going for 2.5-3k USD each in PSA 10. So from this perspective, the price of the sealed box is more than reasonable at $4k.

There is no magic market number that exists. You just have to pay more than everyone else that currently wants a box. You might get lucky and find one under $4k but most likely, if you’re eager to buy today then you’re going to have to pay the full price.

Honesty I think now is the time to try and buy the sealed poncho boxes at an expensive rate rather than an unaffordable rate in 1-2 years

The rise is inevitable.

Do you think its a good price for the box sealed?

Id be buying it from a bookoff store. Which is an offical store chain in Japan so if its fake after opening i believe they would refund me (can check before buying)

I dont believe itd be resealed but ofc there is no guarantee unless you buy it yourself right. I was hoping to find someone who had one so i could.compare the weights

I saw you have an ebay store, so wanted to get your opinion if possible.

Whay do you think of the box sealed vs unsealed? And the current value to the future value of it?

Ive taken another look at the product in person and am pretty satisfied with it and think its legit. Like when moving it i only hear a tiny movement and am certain its the deck organisers in the deck box.

Do you have one of these?

IMO people will always want to open and get that magic PSA/BGS 10. My belief is that in the long term streamers would want these to open on their channel for the poncho cards and the packs (for those ponchos which carry booster packs). Demand, and less sealed in the wild = $$$. Add to that the artwork on the boxes is unique and is nearly 10 years old!

Ponchos appear to be talked about more than Gold Stars in the community (rightly or wrongly).

In terms of the boxes:
The weight of the boxes are very consistent and there is movement inside the box if you turn it. I personally would like to inspect and compare the seals as well to ensure no fraudulent activity has taken place as well. I purchased all mine during launch directly from Pokemon Center Japan so I have a base to compare it with. Try to buy from reputable sellers and if you buy to open, open it in front of them (and film it) with agreement they refund if fake.

Going to be buying this box over the next few days :3

Would love to get peopels opinions on the condition ^^

Now the question is to open or keep sealed :eyes: haha

You said above you wanted it sealed, right? With how much thought you’ve put into purchasing this, I would let yourself enjoy it for at least a couple weeks before making a decision on what to do next

If the decision to open or not isn’t financial, some time may help you determine what you want to do.

If the decision to open or not is financial, you can do an expected value calculation using the pop reports to get an idea of where you’d land

Haha yeah true. Honestly, owning this is like something from your childhood for me, as grew up on the Emerald game series. Main reason as to why i decided to get it. But is a lot of money to have into an item xD

The only other items that’d get me as excited would be the EX Rayquaza Tin or an original GameBoy SP Rayquaza edition.

Definetly is my largest Pokemon purchase and probs one of the best items it could be!
If i decided to open it, it def wouldnt be 100% financial. Itd just be that feeling of opening something cool. But, would also be fun to go through the experience of getting something graded, etc.

Ofc hopefully itll hold its value or increase! What i am praying for really xD as think i got it for a good price compared to what theyre selling for in Japan.

I think it would be cool to build a collection of Emerald / Hoenn based products tho :sunglasses:
