PIKACHU 1ST ED JUNGLE BLACK STAR PROMO - WAS IT INTENTIONAL?

What did it sell for?

@joer
Based on bulbapedia the pull ratio for this card is 1 per 10 boxes so it’s no wonder even the most experienced collectors have never pulled it without slaughtering multiple 1st ed. Jungle cases.

Really cool discovery overall, definitely should have positive effect on 1st ed. Ivy Pikachu price.

A touch over 1k AUD, at the time, Rusty put heaps of high end/hard to find product up for auction such as sealed trainer deck A+B and many others, unfortunately all ended very cheap

How many of these 1st ed black star Pikachu’s exist in psa 10?

@nanger9, I do not think the Pop report is completely accurate, but from what I saw the PSA 9 count is 34 and PSA 10 is 7. Definitely not a high pop by any means.

I feel it may be inaccurate because it is sometimes mislabeled as a regular league promo card. I had to send mine back to be corrected through Ludkins for this reason. Took 6 months for PSA to fix the label and give it back…

JoeR, i think you are correct. I see it listed as both a league promo and as a jungle promo. It looks like a total of 9 Psa 10’s exist between both label designations. Still a tiny number…

Any idea what a psa 10 is worth?

Well… given the 2 9’s on ebay asking for at least 450 and the limited 10 pop, my guess would be it’s around $1000. It’s a limited pikachu, so it’s gonna be whatever a collector is willing to pay. Simple as that. Could be upwards of 1500 for all know…

Thanks @styluspt and others for all the information here. One of most fascinating errors out there and I’m sold on it being intentional. This thread convinced to me to finally add one to my Pikachu collection!

Still remember that auction, always wondered who ended up acquiring it. Definitely one of my top regrets in not winning it.

I’m new here, but objectively speaking it’s kind of an odd occurrence for this to truly be an error. I mean how does one card randomly get the stamp, then get randomly inserted into packs? And with such infrequency but uniform enough to be “known” as 1 in ten boxes? Especially if the card was not on the print sheet. Further, the card is pikachu, easily the most recognizable pokemon character. I mean if it was truly an error, what are the odds it would be a pikachu error? How many other promo cards were there that this could have mistakenly happened to? I hope my logic there translates.

Another question to consider is whether there is any other example of this happening? WOTC is pretty good about this sort of thing. And this was 1999 by the way, they were old hats at QC by then. The first MtG set, Alpha, had some “famous” errors back in 1992/1993. Like a basic land card (Island) in a rare slot but it is right there on the uncut sheets for all to see. And there were some other other random errors in packaging then like “god packs” full of rares and alpha rares being in beta packs. But there are some logical explanations for those. To my knowledge, other than cutting errors, misprints etc there aren’t any known “mass” packaging WOTC errors past that time.

if there’s ANY evidence that this Pikachu stamping and uniform distribution among boxes was intentional, wouldn’t that fit the situation better? To be clear, I’m convinced this was intentional placement and not an error. Again I am new here but from the outside looking in that what it seems like to me.

In any case, this is really cool. Wish there were some old WOTC employees lurking here.

A streamer just shared this in a FB misprint group. Pulled 9 total from 3 packs.

Pulled at 2:44:00, 3:16:00 and 3:27:00

Hope this helps inform about distribution in some way.
