Netflix tax Australia

Important: “Netflix tax” effective 1 July 2017
From 1 July 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will apply to fees on eBay.com.au, due to new legislation in Australia (the “Netflix Tax”).

Businesses registered for GST will not be affected by this change if you register your Australian Business Number (ABN) with eBay here.

More information on this new legislation can be found here.

The eBay Team

Never buying anything from Harvey Norman ever again and I will be popping champagne the day they close down.

Any reseller that earns over $75,000 in revenue has to pay GST under the legislation and therefore pass this 10% fee on to the buyer (thus increasing the cost of our goods by 10%).

The problem that has occured when drafting the legislation is that the Australian Government has chosen to treat eBay as one retailer (rather than eash user as an individual retailer) and therefore regardless of whether we are buying from a hoppy seller who makes 1,000 or someone who tips over the 75,000 threshold we will be obligated to pay 10% gst on top of all purchases.

This is absolutely disastrous and really damages the viability of collecting for us Australians as we now have to pay more for our items and there may be hesitation from people willing to sell due to GST complications.

I for one will be now seeking to purchase more of my cards directly through sellers off efour or instagram as it is likely they are earning less than 75,000 in revenue and therefore no GST will be applicable.

It’s going to be a bumoy ride seeing how this all unravels but i sure can’t wait to wipe my ass with the next harvey norman catalogue i come across.

Ps. I realised your post is about our ebay fees now incurring GST as well. Yeah how fu***in s#!+ anither thing to rant about

Yeah its not very clear and when i click the find out more link it just takes me to home page.

Yeah it might make a difference when u consider its on top of unfavourable exchange rates atm. The frustrating thing is i dont even think itll raise much revenue due to the costs of implementing. Simply another way to move money from the regular population to the rich.

How fucking delightful. Good thing I have an ABN I guess

You having an ABN only matters if you are paying tax already on your sales and purchases.

That line will mean ABN holders won’t be double taxed IAW GST.

Too early to know for sure

Hi mate. This post is about GST being applied to ebay seller fees from July 1 onwards. Gst is 10% so if your ebay fees are $10 for the month of July you will now pay 10*1.1 = $11 ($1 of that being GST which goes to the government)
