My card went missing in UPS Barcelona hub — advice and discussion

So 3 months ago I sold a Moduwa sketch card to a collector in the United States from Spain. It was a holo energy with a really cool Espeon sketch on it.

This morning I received a message that the card itself was listed on eBay.

It is the exact card because as you may know these are all one of one sketches and they are it almost impossible to replicate.

UPS tracking shows that it is still in Spanish customs and that it never left the country.

I do not think that it was the original buyer of the card that stole it because it never entered the United States. It was also listed on eBay with the exact same sleeve top loader and plastic bag that I had shipped it in. Only someone not familiar with these cards would have listed it so publicly.

Based on the tracking showing it never left Barcelona UPS hub, I think it was likely stolen from within the network. Of course, I don’t know what happened to my package or who may be responsible — all I can confirm is that it never reached it’s destination and then appeared on an eBay account registered in Spain.

I am looking for advice on anyone who has seen something similar.

So far I have made a report on eBay. I have followed up with the UPS claim that I had originally made with UPS and I will be filing a police report when I get back to Spain.

I accept that I will probably not get this card back. However I would like to cause as much irritation and stress as possible to this thief.

Has anyone encountered anything similar and what would you do in the situation? Thank you!!

if u have ups insurance u can file item not delivered claim with them. should be pretty cut and dry since they never scanned it as delivered but who knows with ups…

Yeah no insurance on this one, sadly.

I’m not specifically caring about the money tbh but would love to get this guy caught haha

Sorry this happened to you. It mustve been infuriating seeing the listing. Hope the guy gets caught. Karma comes swift.

should have just bought the card and then claimed you received an empty package. idk what the ethics of that is, but he has 75% feedback so it seems more likely an outcome than the police doing anything

I think @swolepoke may have had a similar experience

You know my story about all my stolen cards, this would be a good scenario since now it’s out on a public site and it has eyes on it. Hope the police can step in. I hope you get it back! **** that guy

That’s insane. Hopefully this person gets caught and is held accountable.

If you don’t mind sharing, in which region did this happen (the step at which the package was lost)? UPS has been the most reliable courier for me, not a single issue in over 15 years. DHL surprisingly has been the most problematic one during Holidays. Anyways I don’t want to go on a tangent, complaints about shipping companies in Spain would warrant their own thread

Spain bro, specifically Barcelona/Valencia region.

Ups has been great for me too, but this is next level.

I would have no issues doing this but I’d prefer him to get fired from UPS

There’s also a remote possibility that the shipment or label was damaged, and they just took the contents of the destroyed or unlabelled package and listed it. HOWEVER, with 75% reputation, I think it’s a better bet this is your guy.

I’d buy it and ‘karma’ him. There’s also the possibility he’d actually backstab you when you buy it, then you’d have double the legal claim against him.

I believe in coincidences. They happen ALL the time. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

You can’t put the cat back in the bag now, but you probabaly shouldn’t have messaged them. I feel like it could risk a potentially favorable outcome happening for you. Either with legal ramifications for the one who stole it or for getting your card back.

I wanted to scare him to returning the card, but that didn’t work.

At this stage I have enough info on him to cause a headache for sure.

I don’t think messaging him would have changed much.

I think legally, it’s better if I didn’t do a reverse Uno card as some people are suggesting.

This exactly. It’s not always about the money. Would be nice to see some repercussions for thieves and scammers in this hobby but that almost never happens :frowning:

Update -

Based on my experience and reports from other collectors who have had a similar recent experience with a package sent through UPS, and who say they’ve filed a police report, dozens of high-value cards appear to have gone missing after transiting the UPS Barcelona hub, which then appeared on the same Ebay account & also in a card store in Barcelona. I do not know who is responsible. I’m sharing this to help others take precautions while investigations continue.

For now, my personal approach is to avoid describing contents in detail on customs forms (e.g., “hobby items” rather than specific card names) and to consider alternatives for shipments involving Spain.

Note: These are my opinions based on my shipment and unverified reports from other collectors. Nothing here alleges criminal responsibility by UPS or any store/individual. If new verified information emerges, I’ll correct/update this post.

Thanks for the heads up. Just a question, if I have to ship something to Spain and I use the national courier service on my end, does it default to UPS in Spain or will it also be routed to Spain’s national mail service?

Will follow your advice on the package descriptions though.

Cheers!

If you send via your national carrier, it will be routed to Correos, Spain’s national carrier - not UPS.

I think the exception is DHL Packet, which is delivered via DHL Spain.
