Its Mercari, direct payment, or cash when it comes to modern booster boxes for me. eBay has some terrible buyers.
After wasting over an hour and a half on the phone with a supervisor who didn’t want to do their job, just got someone in authenticity who understands trading cards and shut the case down.
Out of curiosity, did you feel like the size and longevity of your account help in getting the issue resolved? I have never had a good experience with ebay customer service, they are always terrible
Have they also agreed to remove the incoming negative review from the buyer?
Urgh glad you made this thread, can spill my very sour grape juice. I feel like there’s a certain demograph of Gary V-worshipping Gen Z’ers who spend all day drooling over pyramid schemes and crypto discussion videos on Instagram to try to ‘build wealth’ as quickly as possible, by looking for the shortest and lowest-effort routes possible, regardless of whether they have to step on tons of other people to do it or not. People’s attitudes are now being molded by a pervasive culture of instant gratification and false narratives spread by people who haven’t got a fucking clue what they’re talking about. Throw in a lack of patience, an unwillingness to spend time learning, and a general disregard for others, you get modern product speculators. Yuck. My own saltiness aside, I hope these lots work out for you and eBay grants proper justice!
Depending on how relentless this guy wants to be you may end up with a chargeback situation. People like this are few and far between for me but when they do pop up it absolutely sucks. Please do share the name afterwards so they can be added to my blocked buyers list (has grown quite a bit recently).
Who buys modern boxes these days for the chase card?! Speculators aren’t the brightest bunch especially when its cheaper to buy the singles.
As for the ebay ban list. It would be good if somewhere on the reworked thread there is just a copy and paste list we can all just copy and paste into our eBay accounts.
for me at this point, the case should be definitely closed and the account suspended, when you lied and tried to exploit the system, that’s must be it… im glad you finally made it but as you said, it was a waste of time.
Honestly I think its more to do with being relentless. I spoke to 6 different people before someone actually wanted to do their job. Part of the problem was explaining the concept of a sealed box vs opened. Once I got authenticity and someone who understood trading cards, it was resolved in 5 minutes. The other hour and a half was just the warm up.
They need a hotline for this shit.
This same person is going to go on Reddit or something and post about how they “were sold a resealed box on eBay and eBay denied their refund”, provide minimal information or evidence, and receive a bunch of upvotes and comments about “how much of a problem this is”.
They even got it for a great price, wow. I mean, come on…
ive seen buyers complain on reddit that sellers wouldnt bend over backwards for them and the comments are filled with “Scammer”, “obvious scam”, “report the seller”, “crappy seller”, etc
Yeah, this has been going on since 2020/2021 to be honest. Discords always full of people receiving product from reputable dealers and stores, actual stores, and claiming anything that has a slight QC issue is re-sealed or fake. I don’t get it.
In 2020 I was so annoyed with stuff like this I decided to not sell sealed Pokemon product on eBay anymore. I was able to sell all the sealed stuff I had on PWCC, Instagram, and e4. The only place that might be worse than eBay for sealed sellers is Facebook; the comment sections are pretty much all “This Sun and Moon box looks fake… I joined the hobby three months ago and based on extensive research I can tell the plastic is off.”
I got some resealed boxes from pokemon center online too since I didn’t pull the 1 card I wanted!
Everytime I hear about one of these cases, it makes me not want to keep an extra sealed of anything modern for down the road, just to avoid potential headache. These people who “think” their boxes are resealed, even when coming from a reputable source haven’t had enough hands on experience with what they’re buying to understand how inconsistent the quality control for sealed modern is.
I actually remember specifically opening Evolutions from multiple sources and taking note that some packs did indeed have extra glue/really stiff edges, but they definitely weren’t resealed, that’s how they just were. A little more recently, I remember ordering a 3 pack blister for Evolving Skies at launch from the Pokemon Center and when I got it, one of my packs wasn’t even completely sealed (it was half open). Yet, it came directly from the source!
Anyways, glad to hear you found a supervisor to advocate for you! Sucks you still had to waste all that time to fight the good fight.
I agree. Going to other discussion sites and browsing various YouTube videos, I got nothing but bad vibes out of the Modern English ‘investor’ market/community. Basically, these are the top 3 things I’ve seen:
-
No one really has a plan for anything. Basically, they’re just buying whatever the people on YouTube are buying or promoting… or what is being hyped on some other discussion forum or social sites. No one has a good entry plan or exit plan. Just filling a closet or garage with boxes of products.
-
Many think kids today will get hit with a wave of nostalgia in 20 years like vintage collectors and the boxes and cards will moon. This could be possible, but I do not believe it will ever come close to the vintage experience. Maybe I’m an ignorant boomer or just biased, but in my view the level of attrition and sheer popularity of early Pokemon to me is unparalleled and will never be matched again. When was the last time you heard of Pokemon cards being banned at nearly every school? I haven’t heard it in 20+ years.
-
No one really cares about collecting or enjoying things much it seems. It’s just all about invest, speculate, dollar cost averaging, buying the dip, buying the reprint, waiting for the reprint. Basically, there’s just nothing fun about what it is people are doing in my view. Part of what made vintage great to me was the fact people highly value the experience of it and the memories of it all. There’s nothing fun about constantly hoarding sealed boxes, packs and whatever else (to me) and the endless optimization of it all.
I guess I sort of made a big rant here, but I can’t put into words how frustrating that was to read.
Holy cow, makes me glad I’m not messing with modern sealed. Can’t believe they’d be picking on you like that and go so far as to lie and open a phony case with ebay. Thank goodness you were able to get a hold of someone who knew how everything worked.
Just my opinion ofc, but I’m not a big fan of the modern english space in general anymore because of the annoying rise and grind flippers pretending to be “investors.” Theres an obnoxious smarmy attitude and insane defensiveness towards the product they tout. And sometimes this weird vendetta against vintage cards and collectors who are skeptical due to ultra modern’s volatility and highly speculative nature?
I feel bad, but I don’t even like things like ETBs anymore because I so heavily associate them with the “scumbag investor” side of the hobby
Sdskfdks oh dear. I’m sure this guy is very nice outside his channel, but bruh. Pokemon cards are so much more than “just cardboard” to me, but the content on this channel had me saying “calm down son, it’s just cardboard.” Definition of the attitude I was talking about in my previous comment.
