Misgraded or usual for PSA 9?

Looking at the front to me it looks good , looking at the back I see that bottom right and I just question if this is usual for psa 9 shadowless charizards with psa? Maybe no flaws on the card besides that back bottom right , but since this is a new cert and how psa is grading everything more harshly I am curious to ask what you all think if this is a psa 9 or should have been graded lower.

Misgraded. Holo scratches too.

It seems like one of the less strong examples of a 9.

I would also say this looks like a lower quality 9. I’d grade this an 8 myself, so I wouldn’t call it misgrade because +/- 1 grade is within the realm of subjectivity. I’d reserve misgrade for something like +/- 2 to 3 grades, where it’s clear a major flaw like a crease or indent has been missed.

Just goes to show that even if you accept that PSA is “grading harsher now” (this has never been proven and has been a talking point since 2019), you should still take a close look at any card you’re looking to purchase. Questionable grades and high quality/low quality examples of grades will happen regardless of what number the cert starts with.

I see what your saying especially with this example of a 6 cert and it looks to me like a 9 grade much more

Would you consider this a stronger 9 in general ? I’m actually considering purchasing this one possibly but there are lots of options out there it seems

At the end of the day, you’re the one spending thousands of dollars on this card. Buy a copy that you will be happy with. Our opinions shouldn’t really matter.

We all have different opinions on what type of damage bothers us the most. Check the centering, corner wear, edge wear, surface scratching, silvering, etc. and ask yourself if it meets your subjective standards for a PSA 9.

In this market, I don’t think people are looking at the card quality at all. They see a label and press the buy button. You’re already one step ahead by asking yourself if the grade aligns with your expectations.

Many copies of this card exist, so I would be extra picky. Good luck!

I like the newer cert better myself. The centering matters more to me over a little white on the backside. If you end up actually putting the card on display, minor imperfections on the back are not a priority to me over centering , or really ugly corners.

9looks fair to me

Centering isn’t a huge deal breaker for me , I would prefer less holo scratches and whitening/ specs as possible while also trying to find a deeper vibrant red copy so I think this may be the one for me.

I do like to see what the forum thinks as well so here it is and let me know if this is a fair 9 grade :

People often refer to PSA grades as “weak” or “strong” especially for 9s and 10s. Personally, I’m not a fan of this terminology at all as it often feels like a way to justify bargaining or undervaluing a card that’s already been graded.

While I understand that human error can occur and some misgrades do happen unless it’s an obvious egregious mistake I prefer to respect the grade as it stands rather than splitting hairs over something that’s ultimately subjective. It’s a PSA 9 so it’s a PSA 9, if there is something that stands out to you go with your gut as we all have different preferences to the amount of damage, whitening or centering we allow for within a grade.

Looks like a 9 to me. Id purchase this card if I was looking for a 9 shadowless zard, not sure if that means anything to you lol

Cuteness overload holy lol

Haha I appreciate your opinion, I do like this particular copy and do want it. It also is nice to read what others feel about it and see what they see as a 9 grade

In my experience, a PSA 9 is always going to have some noticeable flaw(s) and the only way to get a near perfect card is a PSA 10.

So for example, a 9 could have near perfect centering and next to no whitening, but then the holo/surface could have a flaw or 2. That could include print lines, light scratches, etc. On the other hand, you could find a 9 with more whitening on the back, but a more flawless holo on the front. This is why I usually will buy cards with more whitening as I prefer a cleaner holo/surface if all possible.

It really just depends on what dropped it down to a 9 or 8 grade instead of a 10. Even a 10 can be at times slightly O/C, but in my experience all of my 10s have flawess holo surfaces. WOTC cards have slight wiggle room at times since they are vintage and have ‘known’ issues (i.e. Jungle holo silvering on the edges, etc). You will see those sometimes with silvering but still get a PSA 10 compared to other sets as long as it’s not severely noticeable, because so many of them have that known flaw in the set. If it’s real bad they will score an 8 or 9 usually, so it really depends.

This makes a lot of sense , that’s why I’m not as particular for centering if the holo looks pretty clean with hardly any scratches or lines and the card doesn’t show a lot of whitening I’m happy

Mind you if the card is super off center I would hope the company would grade it OC

After buying about 20 psa 9 cards (which means my experience buying psa 9 is ridiculous comparing to other here) i feel the same all the PSA 9s have 1 or 2 noticeable flaws what does not match with the definition of PSA for a 9 (they say PSA 9 only exhibits a minor flaw).
