Well said! You would be surprised how some people view cards as “mint”. I have seen cards listed as “near mint” that look like they have been dragged through hell and back. Always ask for pictures and never take someone’s word.
Yep. I honestly also think that some of the people listing these cards are just trying to sell stuff off and genuinely have no idea what “mint” or “near mint” even means.
This is pretty much why I don’t do trades. Other person always wants to get more value or unload their “mint” cards. Anyway the cards you received don’t look terrible. I just wouldn’t expect anything gradable to come through a trade.
I never, ever, ever trust anyone stating their card is mint unless it’s been PSA graded, a member of this community or my local card store (who promptly refunds me if I am not happy with the condition of the card). Whenever someone says mint, I literally am expecting at the most a PSA 6-7, and nothing more, as I will be most likely disappointed. Seriously sometimes my only criteria is if the card is not creased, and even then I get disappointed.
One time I was looking for a card in NM condition and bought 4* on ebay. 3/4 of them had a small crease on the card.
I guess it’s a lesson well learned. We all make some rookie mistakes and learn from them. Even the most trusted sellers barely ever dare stating a card is Mint.
There’s maybe 5 people in the world I would trust if they told me it’s Mint+ and I’d send the cards/cash no questions asked.
Yeah, sellers look at older or sold listings: see the keyword Mint. They compare sold cards to thier cards, feeling all confident, start new listings with the same Mint keyword and similar prices. Either that or they just try to scam gullible buyers off.
Buyers who buy similar cards on a daily basis (labelled as Mint but in reality, not really) and they think the cards are as described. Therefore this action becomes like cancer, a disease, spreading to other buyers/sellers; doing the same action in infinite loops… It’ll never end and the chances of finding actual mind cards will become rarer and rarer.
You just gotta know certain trusted/reliable people that sell actual mind cards. You should be fine then
Unless I know the seller I always assume that if I order anything “mint” online it’s not going to be anything better than PSA 8/9 quality. Even with detailed pictures I just make the assumption that it’s not as good as they say or it looks. I had a guy send me an entire common/uncommon 1st ed fossil set in “mint pack fresh” condition. Every single one of them has some sort of whitening on the back, most being bad enough to warrant an 8.
