I recently watched some discussions on Lugia vs Ho-oh, and it seems as if about two thirds prefer Lugia, to one third liking Ho-oh better. As some of you know, I´m kind of a Ho-oh fanboy, so I thought it´d be interesting to see what Efour thinks of this matter. Do share your reasons.
For me, it comes down to; better lore, picking Pokémon Gold, lesser, but more focused design.
I like them both a lot, but always found Ho-oh a bit underrated in comparison between the 2. I love how he appears early on the in the anime as a bit of mystery. For cards I think the Neo Revelation Ho-oh looks a lot cooler than the Neo Genesis Lugia even though they’re both really nice cards. I also had Pokemon Gold instead of Silver as a kid so that probably introduces a bit of a bias, but overall I like Ho-oh the most personally.
So, these two have always bugged me as a pair. They’re NOT designed as a pair. I don’t remember some of the details, but Lugia’s creator for the second movie spent hours and months pouring over it’s design, (to an unhealthy level apparently) only to have it used for Gold and Silver, which he had not intended it to be.
Also, I feel like Ho-oh’s level of lore doesn’t measure up to Lugia’s. Ho-oh potentially but not officially is connected to the eeveelutions, and the gen 2 legendaries, while appearing in the first episode of the show. I love the kimono girls lore around Ho-oh, however, and it feels weaker around lugia. But was it just convenient to use THAT mon? Just so happens, IT is the legendary for gen 2? I’m left with too many questions.
Lugia however, has explicit connection with the gen 1 legendary birds. “Protector of seas, and ruler of storms”, really fits its design and makes lugia’s lore more interesting to me. It looks like it can cut through water at sonic speeds and punch holes through hurricanes, and speak telepathically. I believe that it can tank hits from the legendary birds. Lugia feels more like a fleshed-out concept. Ironically, its lore got less attention in GS, as if they just relied on the previous stuff to carry it.
But I can’t consider them a pair at all. In my mind, choosing between them is like choosing between Kyogre and Dialga.
To me, everything about Lugia as it originally appeared, fits. Over time, its “wings” and feet have gotten bigger, kinda breaking the sleekness, but it feels to me like a refined highly specific unique legendary concept, while Ho-Oh is another legendary bird.
Lugia has such an awful design, I hate it’s hands, I hate the little black things on it’s back, it looks like it has rubbery dolphin skin but somehow also sheds silver feathers
When I look at ho oh I compare it to a phoenix, which is supposed to be a majestic creature. But ho-oh’s proportions and overall design seems more derpy than majestic. When I look at Lugia I don’t really have anything else to compare it to. Anyone else know a turtle headed, whale bodied, flying dragon with digits on its wings? While Ho oh is kind of underwhelming compared to its source material, Lugia just feels unique.
I always thought Lugia was just some random swan, with no interesting place in Pokemon’s story (anime or general lore). Even its supposed connection to the legendary birds is barely.. developed. It just doesn’t feel right.
Ho-oH is an ugly phoenix, but at least it’s still a phoenix, which is cool. Its bond with the legendary beasts is great, and so is its connection to Ash. That’s The Pokémon that made all of us kids dream even more about Pokémon and its mysteries when we saw it in the very firs episod.
Tbh even though they were not designed as a pair I remember staring at a copy of both Gold and Silver in a used game store with my mom and being in filled with indecision because I really liked both Pokemon on the covers. These two are a pair in my mind. I just like them best when they are together!
