Love for Onix - Collection (Work in progress)

Couldn’t seem to find anyone with an Onix collection so I am posting my own. Still quite a few to collect, going for all english and japanese including all variants like shadowless base and the reverse holos. Also any card with Onix in the card art.

The Aquapolis one is my favorite artwork for Onix!

My favorite has always been the sunset Aquapolis Onix as well. What’s your least favorite?

Onix as a kid was pretty damn iconic for me. The first real massive Pokemon they introduced to the series for the first real major Gym battle. Seeing that giant rock snake take up the size of the gym was thrilling and looked like a major powerhouse.

Wicked glad to see someone appreciate the Pokemon like this. Looking forward to seeing what you add on in the future!

Hmm that’s tough! They are all pretty cool and unique, maybe the Stormfront one if I had to pick one.

Most underrated Pokemon of them all–he and Steelix get incredible, well-deserved art consistently. Base (shadowless) onix is one of my priorities in slabbing once I get around to it, because I see it as that much of a trophy. He’s going to represent the fighting energy among the elements.

Love to see an Onix collection!

Love onix and love this post!
do you collect steelix at all? Steelix is an all-timer for me

Nice, Onix… rocks!

You may be interested to know that yesterday Fanamel on Twitter discovered that a lot of Pokémon card backgrounds are stock images from a website called Sozaijiten.

I’ve been looking through their library today and I’ve discovered the image Base Set Onix uses:

This is from www.sozaijiten.com/cdrom/sozaijiten.asp?vol=6

Its description is 岩山 (Iwayama), which I imagine is where the picture was taken.

That is so cool! Thanks for sharing!!

Amazing!

You have to add the vending one, cheap and such a contrast to normal onix cards^^

Onix is definitely one of my faves. He’s got a simple, but iconic and identifiable design. Plus, as others have said, some really nice card art. Great collection!

this would be a cool addition to your collection, southern island onix for english and they do tropical island for the japanese variant

Neo Genesis was my fave, but I just purchased Aquapolis thanks to this thread ^^

Awesome! I love seeing species collections

I like Onix a lot because it’s a clear example of a Pokémon created to fulfill a specific function. Onix is the first “boss Pokémon” of RBY which has really high defense to force type exploitation but really low attack to give a newbie the chance to figure it out. You can’t always see the design intention behind every Pokémon but Onix always stood out to me as a Pokémon with a clear mechanical purpose that it performed really well.

This is a great point, unless you picked Charmander lol I would grind in Viridian Forest until it was strong enough to beat Geodude/Onix just using ember. That battle was supposed to help teach you about type advantage but it taught me that I can brute force my way through the whole game with one Pokemon.

5 year old me in Pokémon yellow nearly gave up on the game because of that rock snake. I think there’s one Pokémon in yellow which has a super effective move and that’s a Nidoran with double kick which was super hard to catch anyway. I think I got by with a butterfree in the end. Probably the reason why I’ve got a receding hairline 20 years later
