Shouldn’t everyone understand how this works by now? We still playing that lame old track, “this will attract the bad people who only care about fast money”; they already came and went. That’s a major reason why you can buy a lot of wotc product cheaper today than a year ago.
Hype is temporary. The real ones stick around. A lot of really good people will hear about this purchase, or some related news article and start collecting pokemon. If that is somehow perceived as a negative, you are the problem.
Mostly this is a thin veneer; the real Ikea pulp repeated ad nauseum underneath is “I don’t want to associate my beloved hobby with this person.”
And it’s easy to say “so don’t associate it with them then blah” but that becomes harder to do when the same guy is the continuous focal point for the crux items of the hobby. It’s as if Kim Kardashian bought Manchester United.
Number1pokemonmaster auctions the case for $91,300CAD on eBay. Cancels the winning bidders purchase (the buyer wanted to meet in person). Says in messages that they got the case from an estate sale and in other messages it was a gift for their 12th birthday.
Guy named Jacob contacts Meelypops, they purchase the case and also authenticate it with Baseball Card Exchange (This case will be the first Pokemon item they have ever authenticated). They sell the case for $2.7m
Shyne150 is the next owner who then sells to LP for $3.5m
And i was referring to the “exposure” part, if you read slowly, i said that it is undeniable something huge and in way or another, we will all be affected.
Just like every fake charizard on ebay that “Was pulled from a pack from target, I swear so it must be 100% real.” Not commenting on whether it is or isn’t fake but that seems like an actual joke in regards to ‘provenance’.
The authentication game is in an even worse state than grading. Hard to believe, I know, but it’s true. It’s a 3,5 million dollar brown box with a paper tag and some retail tape on it. Anything less than a laboratory examination done in collaboration with the foremost curators (if we had them) is laughable.
High-status guesswork and contradictory “attic/my mom”-stories wouldn’t be enough for me personally, but then I don’t have the same nonexistent risk margin like Mr. Paul does. He’ll still have food on his plate if the thing is botched. If I were him, I’d chance it too.
This really is a historical moment for the Pokemon hobby. It certainly brings to light the validity of all the years of hard work to get people to see this as more than a passing fad or kids game. There’s serious collectors in this world and serious dollars are being spent to keep it growing. Congratulations to everyone involved! It doesn’t matter if it’s a YouTube celebrity or unknown buyer for this box. It’s still amazing to see a sealed 1st edition Base box. Also proud of the fact that a Canadian (like myself) was part of this special deal.
The other night pokejew and going twice had a 36x black triangle giveaway. It took then two hours to get the stream to open then maybe another 15 minutes to get to where they could create and auction or a giveaway. Once it was rolling though it went smooth. I’d guess it was an intentional stress test of their systems. Poor start but rebounded well.
They pulled somewhere around 1 to 2k it seemed. You couldn’t tell really because the viewership glitched out but they were getting over 1k entries into most of the giveaways. I’d be shocked given that they pulled ~2k if Logan paul didn’t pull at least 50-100k. Same goes for Ninja on new years day. Hopefully they can scale that quickly because it’s a huge opportunity for their app and I’m sure they’re spending well on it.
