I recently stumbled upon what I think is fantastic deal, butI cant be certain as I am relatively new in the sense that I am back into Pokemon collecting after 15 or so years!
The deal is:
-207GX, full art, ultra rare cards
-8 binders of each set, each set has 1-4 of each card (sword and shield, cosmic eclipse, hidden fates, unified minds, unbroken bonds, team up, lost thunder, dragon majesty).
-1 binder mix and math of older sets
-Every card new to mint apprently
extras: 6 binders, 2 boster back, card box full of sleeves and dividers
$3000 for modern? What do you plan on doing with 8 binders of each set? Sounds like a flipping venture and flipping modern isn’t the easiest. You’d probably have to sit on that stuff for awhile.
From what you’ve described the 207 GX sound like the overwhelming value of the set. Not sure if the Hidden Fates set includes SV1 through SV94, if so then that would be quite valuable assuming they’re pack fresh.
My advice, if you’re just getting back into collecting after 15 years, don’t dive headfirst into a massive purchase of cards like this one. More than likely you’re paying a hefty convenience premium for having full (what does “full” mean, master sets?, including all special/secret/ultra/hyper rares? reverse holos?) sets and the market value of the total collection is quite a bit less than $3,000.
Personally when I started back up in 2017, I made a lot of really dumb purchases because I simply didn’t really understand what I wanted to collect. There are SO many avenues to go down when it comes to pokemon collecting, and finding out you would have preferred to go down a different route after making a huge purchase would be quite devastating, especially if your budget is limited.
To give you an idea of some of the different genres of Pokemon collecting:
Only WoTC
Only 1st ed
Master set collecting including variants & errors
Only errors
Only a specific class of errors (e.g., offcenter)
Collecting certain card types (crystals, shinings, pokemon-ex, LV.X, LEGEND, etc.)
Falling in love with a certain era and collecting only that (e.g., EX era, Neo era)
Only reverse holos
Only certain pokemon
Only one of the above in a certain grade
Only one of the above in all possible grades
Only trophy cards
etc…
The list of possibilities goes on and on and most collectors end up being a mix of one or two or several of the above. Definitely don’t pigeonhole your collection early on when you don’t have a good idea of all the different possibilities of things you could collect. It’s surprising how a certain type of collection can so strongly appeal to one person and not another, and how those interests can vary widely as the years ago on. I would have never expected to see or be interested in some of the cards that I’m interested in now, and I’m sure my interests will still continue to evolve as times goes on.
@hypernova Listed some good points. Pretty much nailed it on the head. I collect pretty much everything listed. I just pick the style of card i like best from each era. For Wotc it’s 1st edition holo’s, Shinings, Crystals. Ex era is Ex’s possibly gold stars later. Level X’s, primes, full arts, rainbow rares, gold cards. If I didn’t list it then I most likely don’t collect it. Also not smart to dive straight into flipping. I might start selling cards I buy doubles of soon but I’m a collector not a seller. But once you know what to collect if you ever do actually start selling cards I garentee you would be wildly more successful
Are you collecting or are you investing? If you’re collecting and you think the cards are worth the price you’ve been quoted: fantastic, go for it. If you’re investing you’ll need to do some research and have some form of a plan in place for how and when you’ll be selling the cards on.
If you are investing, a good thing to do would be to count the number of cards you’ll be getting, disregard all of the commons and uncommons, then divide the $3,000 amount by that number - can you feasibly imagine yourself selling each of the cards for that amount if and when you come to sell? Do the cards that are worth 2-10x that amount make up for the cards which are worth 2-10x less than that amount?
Unless they’re ring-bound, 14 binders stacked on top of each other would at least be a comfortable chair to sit on. You might need some tape to stop them for slipping about though.
I agree with @danza21 , you will have to invest a lot of time and energy to make a profit if you are planning on flipping all of those cards. It also depends on what the spread of GX cards look like, as a majority of modern ultra rares are worth very little.
I can attest this when I was first collecting, a ton of dumb purchases because I was excited. Over time, you will gain more knowledge and it is good you came here to ask the question, even if it seems ridiculous or not. One thing I must say is that I still go crazy on purchases when I am bored but I have no one to blame but myself lol (soon in an upcoming post).
If by “good deal” you mean monetary value wise, then do your own homework.
If by “good deal” you mean I get to complete sets at a fraction of the time needing to source it, then only you can answer that as everyone values their time differently.
I actually did not pursue further investing in such a purchase. I have spoken with the seller directly and they were not completely upfront with the description of what the buyer would be receiving.
For instance…
-Ambiguous generalizing by simply stating “# of gx cards” instead of giving more details on how many are ultra, secret, hyper, or rainbow rare.
-Using wording like “sets” instead of being more specific by mentioning which sets are complete and which sets are not.
Appreciate all the feedback here on the board; positive, constructive, and trolling.
@hypernova, thank you for a very detailed response!
