Is the ultramodern chase premium justified?

The pop report argument has to die. Most people don’t grade, but most open packs and obviously know how terrible SWSH pull rates are and for some stupid reason they still choose to open packs. It doesn’t matter to them what the pop is. It’s not like vintage where you get 75% of the chase cards in 1 box.

As I said it goes back to what one’s perspective is on oversupply. If you were in the hobby pre grading boom, even 1,000 looks massive, heck even 100. Objectively a higher number is at a greater risk of shifting demand, but pop is also related to demand. Cards without much demand do not get graded.

An individual Base set holo rarity is 1 in every 48 packs. To reach 100,000 of each, you just need 4.8m packs or 133,333 boxes. 100,000 is more than many of the highest rarity set cards’ total print runs in SM and SWSH. It could possibly be greater than most cards above holo in DP-BW era given the franchise was at its nadir. Hell, it’s even more than some rarities in the current SV era.

Does that mean 100,000 is a tiny amount? Maybe it is if an Umbreon VMAX SA can go for $928 but then again a Gordie Rainbow goes for $3 within the same rarity. It depends on your perspective.

This will sound super off topic but These kind of things just make me believe that pokemon is just gambling for kids.

How does one determine the correct price for something? The only reasons not to buy at the current prices are if you
A- aren’t interested
B- think the current market price is manipulated and it will drop later
C- you think there will be a reprint
D- you think interests will change and the price will drop

None of those apply/I don’t believe so to me so I’m happy to pay the going rate. In real life I would also pass on something if there were another alternative that was a better value all things considered. That doesn’t apply to me because alt arts are what I choose to collect and enjoy.

I hope you’re not the type of person who lowballs best offers because you feel the card should be cheaper than what it is.

Wait a few weeks and you can trade him for an emerald box

Also pass bc be I don’t think the current asking price is worth it.

I would love to a see a list of the alt cards that aren’t popping off. The only one I can think is altaria

  • Better - demand is all that matters

  • Rarer - when a card is already deemed ā€œgood,ā€ rarity is just a multiplier on value

  • Older - older items are inherently rarer, age alone has no impact. Nostalgia has an impact on an item’s ability to be deemed ā€œbetter,ā€ but there is no set age at which ā€œnostalgia is activated due to being old enough nowā€

  • Minter - condition is also a multiplier on value from the moment a card is released until the end of time. Minter card price >> Less-Mint card price, regardless of nearly all other factors (PSA 1 meme collectors higher ā€œvalueā€ than PSA 2, sure…)

It is what it is. Modern alt arts are deemed ā€œbetter.ā€

You don’t actually believe that do you?

P.s. I think you replied to the wrong Pikachu avatar

how embarrassing, I’ll change

Wait go back. That was the best Pikachu one yet.

i apologize if this sentiment has been expressed already, but price is relative. if you want the card and believe the exchange of that amount of money for that card is worth it to you, then it is justified. it’s one of the reasons why so many people buy cards on day zero.

if there is a set, like lets say sv4 which had the special art paradox legendary trios drops with strong artwork, people who want the art will buy it right away.

this was different back in 2021 when cards were starting out at $500+ like moonbreon and rayquaza vmax sa. today, many of these cards start out at like $30-$50 and may over time drop to like $10-$30, so the question would be, ā€œare you willing to pay a $20ish premium to get it right away and not have to keep checking back over time?ā€

Makes sense to me. I’ve seen a couple of notable figures in the community say you have to wait 2 years before you start considering picking up modern i.e. twicebaked jake. What do you think about that time frame?

Huh?

Buy what you like, when you like it.

Buy what you like when you like, but realize that day 1 purchases are almost always the worst time to buy singles

idk. moonbreon was cheaper day one than it is today…
