How would you spend $54,000?

You have $54,000 to pump into Pokemon. Assume you can own anything, would you assemble your dream collection or destroy the market?

I’d go:

PSA 9 1st Base complete set

Then all these in 10:

1st Jungle

Skyridge
Expedition
FireRed Leafgreen
Holon Phantoms

Dragons Exalted
Shining Legends

And one of the Mitsuhiro Arita trophies.

I would do something like buy up every single psa 10 1st ed caterpie that hits the market regardless of price and just hoard and monopolize the Caterpie market until it hits like $1k each.

Has to be a card that is only desirable in the context of a set. Must also be hard to grade and low pop.

I actually had that decision to make.

Either:

  1. Another 1st Ed Base Box… Pass
  2. An Illustrator… Pass
  3. BGS 10 1st Base Charizard… Bid

Of course I bid $55,000.00 on the Charizard and lost so I had to take my ball and go home.

For me, the item would have to have a “10” and a “1st” and a “Charizard” attached to it for me to spend that kind of money.

On a side note: There’s been 3 different Pokemon items this year that have sold for over 50 grand. What does that tell you about the health of our hobby?

$54,000 would nearly pay off my mortgage. The $54k coupled with some savings I would pay off my mortgage and become debt free.

Free from the shackles of debt then I could really start plowing some more serious money into this hobby without hesitation. I would definitely finish out my WOTC PSA 9 1st edition sets. Probably finish out PSA 9 gold stars. I would just pay that $1500 counter-offer on that holon phantoms box on eBay to finally finish my goal of opening 1 of every sealed box. (Probably will bite the bullet and do that soon anyways).

I would also buy some select sealed boxes to sit on as well as some PSA 10 base set 1st editions as long term investments as I really don’t collect 10’s myself too often.

BR Trophies if they/whenever they showed up on the market. 1st ED WOTC Booster Box stockpile (-base) + EX series Booster Box stockpile + finish my PCG Booster Box collection and PSA 10 1st Ed gold star collection.

Assume that a near mint Celebi gold star is approximately $80…then I would buy 675 of them.

I’d buy 1st edition wotc boxes (not base).

I also think it’d be interesting to buy out a 1st edition holo species and see what happens price & demand wise, maybe 1st edition jungle kangaskhan. It’d take what, $15k to buy every copy in existence at the current market price provided they were all available, and not taking into account potential price movement from removing so many copies from the market over a period of time. That’s not much really, maybe I’ll try it anyway :blush:

I’d like one box of every unlimited WOTC set. Maybe buy a few Skyridge and Aquapolis boxes to crack and get graded for fun because I only got to open a handful of these sets as a kid.

I’d go for Wotc boxes, Ex Boxes, PSA 10 1st ed base cards, shadowless, shinings, crystals, gold stars, and zards.
